Brooklyn Bridge Park Seeks Community Feedback On Squibb Park Pool

BROOKLYN HEIGHTS – Brooklyn Bridge Park (BBP) will host two “Pool Talks” this month to hear the public’s ideas on the new swimming area planned for Squibb Park.

“We want to hear about your experiences, your ideas and concerns and your perspective, to guide a design that reflects the needs, opportunities, and aspirations of our pool,” an announcement for the community discussions reads.

BBP announced in June plans to build a permanent pool at Squibb Park—located above BBP’s Pier 1 and connected by the bouncy Squibb Park Bridge which has been closed since July for repairs. The proposed pool would replace BBP’s popular pop-up pool which debuted on Pier 2 in 2011 with a five-year contract that was extended through this summer due to demands from Love Our Pool, a group of local parents rallying to preserve the pool.

Park officials would like to hear the community’s thoughts on the size and depth of the pool, types of amenities and food vendors, as well as what to do with the space during the off season, according to the Brooklyn Daily Eagle. The article states that they would also like to hear neighbors’ concerns about the increased traffic the new pool will likely bring. Brooklyn Heights residents have complained about large crowds walking through their quiet streets to access BBP as well as violent incidents that have occurred in and around the Park in recent years.

The two “Pool Talks” are scheduled for:

Wed. Sept. 12, 6pm-8:30pm at P.S. 8 (37 Hicks Street, between Poplar & Middagh Streets)

Sun. Sept. 16, 2pm-4:30pm at P.S. 8 (37 Hicks Street, between Poplar & Middagh Streets)

The announcement states that the two meetings will be “identical” and advises participants to attend just one. Register here.
