BROOKLYN NAVY YARD – Recruiting and training has begun in preparation for the long-anticipated opening of Wegmans at the Brooklyn Navy Yard this fall.
Located at 21 Flushing Avenue in the Admiral’s Row development on the Brooklyn Navy Yard campus, the 74,000-square-foot supermarket will hire approximately 500 employees at this location, including 150 full-time staff members, with an emphasis on hiring locally, according to a release from the company. This may be a good opportunity for some job-seeking neighbors at three nearby NYCHA developments (Farragut, Ingersoll, and Whitman Houses) who say it’s been a challenge to find work at the Navy Yard despite the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation’s efforts to hire locally through community outreach and an on-campus employment center.
Full-time positions currently available include entry-level managers, customer service team members, overnight operations team members, and culinary positions such as chefs and line cooks for an in-store market café. Part-time bakery and culinary positions are also currently available while recruitment for other part-time positions will happen at a later date.
“You are more than just a number,” store manager of the Brooklyn location, Kevin Cuff, said in the release. “You are a family member who has a voice and an opportunity to do whatever it is you are passionate about.” Cuff began working for Wegmans at the age of 16 and has been with the company for 21 years.
Founded in 1916, Wegmans currently operates 98 stores throughout New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, and Massachusetts, employing more than 48,000 people. Along with the forthcoming Brooklyn store, Wegmans will open new locations in Virginia Beach, Virginia and Raleigh, North Carolina later this year.
Wegmans offers employees competitive pay and benefits packages, premium pay on Sundays and holidays, tuition assistance, and flexible scheduling. Job seekers can apply online at jobs.wegmans.com or call 347-652-2424. Interviews are by appointment only.
