Local Pols Respond To Trump’s Congressional Address Last Night
Last night, President Donald Trump gave his inaugural speech to Congress in a Joint Session address. We saw twitter light up with responses from pundits, constituents, and politicians from both side of the aisle. Check out the top tweet from your local pols below:
Yvette D. Clarke represents Brooklyn’s 9th Congressional District, and has taken a virulent anti-Trump stance. (Check out her fiery and jam-packed town hall address last week in Prospect Heights here). Clarke’s tweet was apparently referring to this statement from POTUS, which the Twitter Government account pegged as the most retweeted moment of the night:
Democratic Congressman Hakeem Jeffries (8th District), who represents Clinton Hill, Bed-Stuy, and parts of Gerritsen Beach, had this to say:
City Council Member Brad Lander, whose districts include Park Slope, Kensington, and Windsor Terrace, called out POTUS’s stance on women’s health using his own twitter-speak:
City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito has also been actively against Trump’s anti-immigrant policies. Check out the bullet points from her February State of the City address at the Kings Theater here.
Republican Congressman Dan Donovan, who represents Staten Island, Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights, and parts of Sheepshead Bay, released this statement about Trump’s speech last night:
“President Trump offered a bold, ambitious vision, and he extended a hand to all willing to work toward solutions to our problems. We all agree that families should have access to affordable health insurance, jobs that pay a respectable wage, and quality education. Let’s get to work bridging the divides to achieve those goals together.”
Donovan has been receiving pushback from angry constituents lately for allegedly denying requests for in-person town hall meetings (Donovan denied claims that he’s been ignoring requests), and his anti-ACA voting record. And this week, some Bay Ridge neighbors have taken their pleas to the streets again this week with these tongue-in-cheek posters:
