Weekend Art Events: October 19-22 (Family Food Fest, Open Studios, Book Sales & More)
It officially feels like fall outside—perfect weather for a harvest festival at the Brooklyn Navy Yard! Prefer to stay in and cozy up with a good book? Then the Park Slope and Cortelyou Libraries’ book sales can help you find some good reads.
There are also two great opportunities to get out and see some local art and meet the artists at the Flatbush and Gowanus Open Studios.

In Our Backyard
When: Friday, October 20, 6pm to 9pm
Where: Brooklyn Central Library, Dweck Center, 10 Grand Army Plaza, Prospect Heights
What: 57th District NYS Committee Member, Olanike Alabi, hosts a screening of In Our Backyard, a documentary addressing sex trafficking in Brooklyn. The film will be followed by a panel discussion with Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams and other local leaders.

Brooklyn Oktoberfest
When: Friday, October 20-Sunday, October 22, 7pm
Where: Greenpoint Terminal Warehouse, 73 West Street, Greenpoint
What: A Greenpoint warehouse will be transformed into a Munich Oktoberfest tent with Bavarian blue & white ceilings and authentic festival tables imported from Germany.
The weekend festival will offer the opportunity to celebrate at 1 of 5 separate 4-hour sessions, each accommodating up to 1,000 revelers. There will be German dancing, beer, food, music, and a special guest appearance by Melina, performing her song “I Love German Boys.”

Annual Harvest Hang
When: Saturday, October 21, 11am to 3pm
Where: Brooklyn Navy Yard Center, BLDG 92, 63 Flushing Avenue, Fort Greene
What: Get lost in a corn maze, pick a pumpkin, build a scarecrow, and make a clay Halloween mask at the Brooklyn Navy Yard’s annual Harvest Hang. There will also be face painting, music, snacks, and tours of the Navy Yard.

Cortelyou Library Book Sale
When: Saturday, October 21, 11am to 4pm
Where: Cortelyou Library, 1305 Cortelyou Road, Ditmas Park
What: The Friends of Cortelyou Library host this annual book sale featuring gently used books, live music, and raffles, all to benefit the Cortelyou Library.
Park Slope Library Fall 2017 Book Sale
When: Saturday, October 21, 11am to 4pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue, Park Slope
What: The Friends of the Park Slope Library host their Fall 2017 Book Sale featuring gently used hardcovers, paperbacks, fiction, non-fiction, children’s books, cookbooks, music, and more, all to benefit the Park Slope Library.
2017 Flatbush Artists Studio Tour
When: Saturday, October 21-Sunday, October 22, 12pm to 6pm
Where: Various venues, Ditmas Park
What: Twenty-nine participating artists will welcome guests into their homes and studios—many of which are located in free-standing, Victorian houses built in the early 1900s. Attendees will be able to view and collect art as well as talk to the artists about their work. Learn more here.

Gowanus Open Studios

Where: Various venues, Gowanus
What: Gowanus Open Studios, or GOS, returns, with 350 artists in Gowanus (and slightly beyond) welcoming the public into their studios to view their art, chat, and learn about the process of art-making. Learn more here.

Arthur Miller Birthday Celebration

Where: St. Francis College, Maroney Forum for Arts, Culture & Education, 180 Remsen Street, Brooklyn Heights
What: St. Francis College hosts an Arthur Miller Birthday Celebration. The renowned playwright, who would have turned 102 on October 17, lived in Brooklyn Heights in the 1940s and 50’s when he wrote Death of a Salesman, The Crucible, and A View From the Bridge. Actress Jessica Hecht will discuss performing in the Broadway revival of Miller’s, The Price.

Diablo En Brooklyn

Where: Roulette Intermedium, 509 Atlantic Avenue, Boerum Hill
What: Gabriel Alegria and the Afro Peruvian Sextet with special guests Arturo O’Farrill and members of the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra perform a dance piece that melds multi-cultural and multi-ethnic elements from zapateo (tap) dance, modern choreography, and the Peruvian masked tradition of Son de los Diablos.

The Tierney Sutton Band

What: Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts kicks off its 2017-18 season with eight-time Grammy nominee, Tierney Sutton, who will be performing The Sting Variations—jazz interpretations of the former Police frontman’s music.

B.I.G. Annual Fall Planting and Garden Clean-Up

What: Join your neighbors and get ready to garden at the Bay Improvement Group’s Annual Fall Planting and Garden Clean-up event. Enjoy fresh air, gardening, and bagels and coffee while you help beautify the neighborhood.
One More Bite: A Family Food Festival
When: Sunday, October 22, 10:30am to 2:30pm
Where: The Green Building, 452 Union Street, Gowanus
What: This family food festival makes learning about good food fun with delicious food vendors and culinary crafts and games. The festival turns trying new foods into a game for little gourmands, from toddlers to elementary school kids. With each new bite and activity that teaches kids how good food is made, they get a stamp in their passbook. Once it’s full, they get to pick out treats from the Peapod truck parked outside.

Alice Waters in Conversation with Hilton Als

What: Chef, author, and food activist Alice Waters discusses her new memoir, In Coming to My Senses: The Making of a Counterculture Cook, which chronicles her journey leading up to the opening of Chez Panisse Restaurant in Berkeley, California in 1971. Waters describes how she turned her passion project into an iconic institution that redefined American cuisine.

2 Dope Queens

What: Join Phoebe Robinson and Jessica Williams for a live version of their popular podcast featuring stories about sex, romance, race, hair, NYC, and Billy Joel. Each show will be taped for an upcoming HBO special and will include different special guests!
