Weekend Art Events: March 8-11 (Ditmas Snark, Drawing Brains, The Art Of Breastfeeding & More)

We made it through Wednesday’s snow, wind, thunder and lightning!

To combat the cabin fever you may have experienced while sheltering from the winter storm, check out some of the events scheduled for the weekend.

Laugh it up at Ditmas Snark II or enjoy a live preview of jazz singer/songwriter Alicia Olatuja’s upcoming album. There are also art openings, book launches, a soul dance party, and a comedic reading of Poetic Justice.

Drawing on Neuroscience: Celebrate Ramon y Cajal Brain Awareness Week
When: Thursday, March 8, 6pm to 9pm
Where: St. Francis College, 180 Remsen Street (6th Floor), Brooklyn Heights
What: Inspired by the drawings of neuroscientist Santiago Ramon y Cajal, this Art in the Lab event invites attendees to draw from some of Cajal’s favorite subjects including slides of the retina, cortex, and spinal cord. The event coincides with Brain Awareness Week.

Tatiana Padiani: Azul Otra Vez (Blue, Revisited) (work-in-progress)
When: Thursday, March 8 and Friday, March 9 at 7pm
Where: BRIC House Artist Studio, 647 Fulton Street (enter at Rockwell Place), Fort Greene
What: This musical adaption of Rubén Darío’s short stories and poetry combines the author’s characters into a single story about a king who selects entertainers to live and work on his land, and the poet who introduces him to the power of words. The Spanish-language performance features a Latin jazz score.

Borderline – Curated by The Remix
When: Friday, March 9, 7pm to 9pm (exhibition opening reception)
Where: Trestle Gallery, 850 3rd Avenue, Sunset Park
What: A group exhibition featuring work by artists Bonnie Collura, Alex Ebstein, Fabienne Lasserre, and Adia Millett—all who work in a space referred to as the “excluded middle” and question the language of abstraction.

The Guide To Getting What’s Yours

What: Inspired by the life and crimes of octogenarian jewel thief, Doris Payne, this one-woman show incorporates poetry, portraiture, music, and dance to explore how we each create our own identity. Read more here.

The Art of Breastfeeding—Modern Narratives of Motherhood
When: Saturday, March 10, 7pm to 10pm (exhibition opening reception)
Where: MF Gallery, 213 Bond Street, Boerum Hill
What: In honor of International Women’s Month, this exhibition explores the joys, challenges, and body-politics of breastfeeding and motherhood. Featuring the work of two dozen international artists, the exhibit explores their firsthand experiences with breastfeeding and what it means to be women, mothers, and feminists. A portion of the proceeds from the show will benefit La Leche League of Brooklyn.

Where: Temple Beth Emeth v’Ohr Progressive Shaari Zedek, 83 Marlborough Road, Ditmas Park
What: Stand-up comics return for a one-night-only laugh-fest! Ditmas Snark II features host Paul Schissler, headliner Sherry Davey (“NickMom Night Out”) and a line-up of comics who have performed at Caroline’s, Gotham, Broadway Comedy Club, and Stand Up NY.
How Much: Admission $25 contribution ($30 at door) includes complimentary wine (ID required), soda, and refreshments.

Where: Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts, Kumble Theater at LIU, 1 University Plaza, Downtown Brooklyn
What: Brooklyn College continues its 2017-18 Kumble Theater season with jazz singer/songwriter Alicia Olatuja. Drawing from a variety of musical influences including classical, R&B, soul, and gospel, the Brooklyn performer brings her jazz stylings to Kumble Theater at LIU and will preview selections from her upcoming second album, Intuition: Songs from the Minds of Women.

Soul Party: Fred Schneider of B-52’s + Mile High Soul Club

Where: Knitting Factory Brooklyn, 361 Metropolitan Avenue, Williamsburg
What: B-52’s frontman Fred Schneider picks the discs at this all-vinyl 45s, classic soul, funk, northern soul, R&B dance party.

Joint Book Launch: A Colony in a Nation by Chris Hayes & Misdemeanorland by Issa Kohler-Hausmann

What: A joint book launch for Chris Hayes’ A Colony in a Nation (paperback) and Issa Kohler-Hausmann’s Misdemeanorland. A ticket grants the holder entry to the event and the cost will go toward the purchase of either book. ​​The conversation will be followed by an audience Q&A and book signing.

Thug Passion Presents: Poetic Justice
When: Sunday, March 11 at 8pm
Where: Union Hall, 702 Union Street, Park Slope
What: An interactive celebration of classic Black movies through commentary, music, movie clips, and a live table read by comedians, this reading of John Singleton’s 1993 film, Poetic Justice, will feature Dulcé Sloan (“The Daily Show with Trevor Noah”), Sharron Paul (co-host of Union Hall’s comedy show “CHEAP DATE”), comedian Courtney Fearrington, and comedian and “Thug Passion Presents” co-host Shalewa Sharpe.
