Weekend Art Events: February 15-18 (Emergency, Icons, The Goddess & More)

It’s President’s Day weekend and there’s lots going on including art exhibits, concerts, a magic show, and retro gaming tournament!

It’s also Lunar New Year on Friday! Take a look at our list of events celebrating the Year of the Dog including Sunday’s Brooklyn Lunar New Year Parade which is always a (fire)cracking good time.

B-Side: Kita P & Black Licorice, Hosted by Queen GodIs
When: Thursday, February 15, 6:30pm to 9:30pm, doors close at 7:45pm, performance begins at 8pm sharp
Where: BRIC House TV Studio, 647 Fulton Street, Fort Greene
What: B-Side, BRIC TV’s live in-studio music series and screening features performances from emerging and established musicians. This edition features Kita P and her band Black Licorice.

Fight Back Like A GIRL!

Where: Brooklyn Law School, Forchelli Center, 205 State Street, Downtown Brooklyn
What: Indivisible Nation BK, WHARR, #VOTEPROCHOICE, and NYS Attorney General Eric Schneiderman are joined by comedians Lizz Winstead, Aparna Nancheria, Sasheer Zamata, and Maysoon Zayid in an evening of Resistance, laughter, and learning about women’s sexual and reproduction rights in the age of Trump.

Icons In Their Own Right—Works by Makeba Rainey
When: On view Fridays, 3pm to 6pm, February 10—April 6
Where: The Old Stone House, 336 3rd Street (between 4th & 5th Avenues), Park Slope
What: This series of iconic African-American portraits by Makeba “KEEBS” Rainey combines photos of well-known subjects (President Obama, Grace Jones) exuding confidence and power layered with an African-themed design that contextualizes their attitudes.

Myrtle Avenue Black Artstory Month 2018
When: Fridays throughout February
Where: Various venues on Myrtle Avenue, Fort Greene and Clinton Hill
What: Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership presents the 6th Annual Black Artstory Month, SANKOFA: GO BACK AND GET IT. This year’s month-long event series and Artwalk was named by artist Ramona Candy and speaks to the notion that the best way forward is by stopping to reflect in order to be informed, empowered, and inspired by lessons of the past. Free events take place every Friday at businesses along Myrtle Avenue and include visual art by ten Brooklyn-based artists, poetry readings, storytelling, and more. Our History, Our Pride: Hindsight is 20/20
When: Friday, February 16, 7pm
Where: 322 Myrtle Avenue (at Washington Park), Fort Green
What: Part of Myrtle Avenue Black Artstory Month 2018, this exhibition showcases 20 collage sketches by the artist Ramona Candy depicting important African-American figures. Candy will be joined on Friday by actor/storyteller/playwright Daniel Carlton in telling original stories and spoken word. Attendees can create their own collaged short stories based on someone in their immediate history.

For The Love Of Jazz

What: Host Elad Kabilio and vocalists Thana Alexa and Michael Mayo present a romantic evening of Valentine’s Day-inspired jazz ballads and duets by icons including Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald.

What: Award-winning actor/writer/poet/community activist Daniel Beaty portrays more than 40 characters in this solo piece that explores our shared humanity and what it means to be free after a slave ship emerges out of the Hudson River in present-day New York Harbor.

Magic At Coney!!!

What: A magical variety show showcasing a vast array of magicians, including illusionists, escape artists, mentalists, and close-up magicians from around the world.

Classical Sundays: Ian Rosenbaum Presents Liberty Rose Weeping
When: Sunday, February 18, 4pm to 6pm
Where: National Sawdust, 80 N 6th Street, Williamsburg
What: Classical Sundays is a National Sawdust curated series that selects the most innovative performers in the classical and new music scene. This edition features  percussionist Ian Rosenbaum, violinist Emily Daggett Smith, and cellist/composer Andrea Casarrubios playing works by composers Osvaldo Golijov, Andy Akiho, and Casarrubios herself, who will premiere Liberty Rose Weeping.

Min Xiao-Fen with Rez Abbasi: The Goddess
When: Sunday, February 18, 4pm
Where: Roulette, 509 Atlantic Avenue (at 3rd Avenue), Boerum Hill
What: Roulette presents the world premiere of The Goddess, a 1934 Chinese silent film accompanied by a live score from Min Xiao-Fen. The film tells the story of a mother who fights to get her young son an education amid criminal and social injustice in China. The screening will be soundtracked by Rez Abbasi on guitar and Min Xiao-Fen playing multiple Chinese plucked instruments and voice.
