Weekend Art Events: February 1-4 (DUMBO First Thursday, Myrtle Ave Black Artstory Month, Super Bowl Parties & More)

Super Bowl Sunday is coming up—and we’ve listed a few parties down below where you can go check out the game—but there’s lots more happening this weekend aside from football.

DUMBO’s First Thursday Gallery Walk is taking place tonight, the sixth annual Myrtle Avenue Black Artstory Month kicks off on Friday, and a live musical production of Beauty and the Beast will be staged Friday through Sunday in Dyker Heights!

Art In DUMBO First Thursday Gallery Walk
When: Thursday, February 1, 6pm to 8pm
Where: Various venues throughout DUMBO
What: The first Thursday of every month‚ galleries in DUMBO stay open late, hosting special events and receptions while local restaurants and bars offer specials. Highlights for February’s Gallery Walk include Contra-Internet by Zack Blas featuring the world premiere of his new film, Jubilee 2033 at Art in General; The Beginning Choice, a performance by Parastoo Ahoon that looks at the right to life from the perspective of a fetus at A.I.R. Gallery; and Triangle Arts Association‘s Winter Open Studios—a chance to see what Triangle’s artists-in-residence are creating in their studios.

Myrtle Avenue Black Artstory Month 2018
When: Fridays throughout February
Where: Various venues on Myrtle Avenue, Fort Greene and Clinton Hill
What: Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership presents the 6th Annual Black Artstory Month, SANKOFA: GO BACK AND GET IT. This year’s month-long event series and Artwalk was named by artist Ramona Candy and speaks to the notion that the best way forward is by stopping to reflect in order to be informed, empowered, and inspired by lessons of the past. Free events take place every Friday at businesses along Myrtle Avenue and include visual art by ten Brooklyn-based artists, poetry readings, storytelling, and more. Brooklyn Book Launch: Meet the Deplorables
When: Friday, February 2 at 7pm
Where: Pete’s Candy Store, 709 Lorimer Street, Williamsburg
What: Journalist Harmon Leon’s new book is the result of the writer’s undercover work within the ranks of Trump supporters during the election, featuring illustrations by political cartoonist Ted Rall. The free Brooklyn launch party for Meet the Deplorables will feature comedy and multimedia presentations by Leon with a special appearance by Rall.

Brooklyn Art Song Society’s La France IV: La France Moderne
When: Friday, February 2 at 7:30pm
Where: Brooklyn Historical Society, 128 Pierrepont Street, Brooklyn Heights
What: BASS hosts the fourth installment of its five-concert festival celebrating all things French with performances by sopranos Sarah Brailey and Charlotte Mundy; baritone Steven Eddy; and pianists Mike Brofman and Miori Sugiyama. Free pre-concert lecture at 7:00pm by composer Daniel Felsenfeld.

Beauty and the Beast—The LIVE Musical
When: Friday, February 2 at 8pm; Saturday, February 3 at 2pm and 8pm; Sunday, February 4 at 2pm
Where: St. George Community Center Theatre, 6209 11th Avenue, Dyker Heights
What: Jeff Samaha Theater Productions presents a performance of the Disney classic accompanied by a live 20-piece orchestra.
How Much: Tickets $25, $20 children under ten/seniors

Brooklyn Museum’s Target First Saturday: Black History Month
When: Saturday, February 3, 5pm to 10pm
Where: Brooklyn Museum, 200 Eastern Parkway, Prospect Heights
What: Join the Brooklyn Museum in celebrating activists and artists from the national and global African diaspora during an evening of music, dance, literature, and film. Musical performances by pianist and soul singer Aaron Abernathy; funk, rock, and soul band The Skins; Brooklyn-based rapper and multimedia artist LATASHA; and Ian Isiah and Donae’O during Everyday People’s dance party. There will also be hands-on art, pop-up poetry, a feminist book club meeting, community talks, a curator talk on the One Basquiat exhibit, and a screening of the documentary Whose Streets?

Martin Luther King’s The Drum Major Instinct
When: Sunday, February 4, 2pm to 4pm
Where: Brooklyn Public Library, Central Library, 10 Grand Army Plaza, Prospect Heights
What: Samira Wiley performs a dramatic reading of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s sermon 50 years to the day he delivered it on February 4, 1968 at the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia. The Phil Woodmore Singers will sing original music composed for the production and an audience discussion examining themes of racism, social justice, and economic inequality will follow the dramatic staging. Where: Sycamore Brooklyn, 1118 Cortelyou Road, Ditmas Park
What: Watch the big game at Sycamore’s Super Bowl Tailgate Party. There will be BBQing in the back in true tailgate style—with hats and coats on, beer in hand, plate in the other, football playing, and drink specials all day.

Where: Black Forest, 733 Fulton Street, Fort Greene; 181 Smith Street, Cobble Hill
What: Both locations of this indoor German biergarten and kaffeehaus will be showing the game on a giant 13′ HD screen and offering six wings (prepared with a homemade Jamaican jerk sauce) for $2 with any 1L order of one of their German beers.

Schubert’s Last Songs
When: Monday, February 5, 12:30pm to 1:30pm
Where: St. Francis College, Founders Hall, 180 Remsen Street, Brooklyn Heights
What: Baritone Randall Scarlata and pianist Gilbert Kalish will bring to life Schubert’s Last Songs at the premiere performance of St. Francis College’s Spring 2018 Concerts at Half Past Twelve series. Released after his death, Schubert’s Schwanengesang (“Swan Song”) is a collection of 14 works based on poems by Ludwig Rellstab, Heinrich Heine, and Johann Gabriel Seidl. Scarlata and Klaish will perform the entire collection of music which many consider to be some of the composer’s best.

He Brought Her Heart Back in a Box
When: Performances from Thursday, January 18 through Sunday, February 11
Where: Polonsky Shakespeare Center, 262 Ashland Place, Fort Greene
What: Theatre for a New Audience presents Adrienne Kennedy’s new play. Set in Georgia and New York City in 1941, the tale of “segregation and doomed love braids together Jim Crow, sexual hypocrisy, and the lingering shadow of a terrible crime.”
How Much: Tickets $90 – $100
