Wednesday Crime Blotter: Arrest Made in Fatal Bed-Stuy Shooting, Jewelry Burglar Wanted in Sheepshead Bay & More

BED-STUY – Police have made an arrest following the shooting death of 22-year-old Lester Jack in Bed-Stuy early last month.

Tyjuan Cassidy, 39, of Crown Heights was arrested last night following an NYPD investigation and charged with murder and criminal possession of a loaded firearm, police said.

Jack, the son of a Borough Hall staffer, was shot and killed around 4:00 pm on Sunday, September 2, at Hancock Street and Spencer Place, near the John Hancock Playground’s basketball courts.

“A member of our Brooklyn Borough Hall family has lost one of their own. We share in mourning the life that gun violence tragically claimed yesterday afternoon in Bed-Stuy,” Borough President Eric Adams said at the time. “I am as resolute as ever to combat this epidemic that has deeply hurt so many of us.”


BOROUGH PARK – Another arrest was announced by the NYPD, this one for a series of burglaries at religious institutions around Borough Park.

Charles Cajigas, 50, was arrested for criminal possession of stolen property and criminal trespass, police said.

Cajigas allegedly stole religious relics, $20,00 in cash and a cell phone after a string of burglaries earlier this month.

SHEEPSHEAD BAY – Last week, a burglar broke into a Sheepshead Bay home and stole a few items from the 65-year-old resident.

The break-in occurred around 8:00 am on Thursday, October 16, in the area of East 24th Street and Avenue W, said police. The suspect broke a basement window at the location to gain entry, then stole some jewelry and an iPad. He then fled in an unknown direction, said police.

WILLIAMSBURG – Police announced that they’ve quickly caught a motorcycle thief after releasing his picture and calling for the public’s help in identifying the suspect.

The theft took place on Wednesday, August 8, police said, around 2:15 pm. The thief stole the victim’s blue 2003 Suzuki motorcycle from the side of the massive residential development at 544 Union Avenue, between Frost and Withers streets.

On Monday, October 22, police arrested Mandell Scott, 52, after an ongoing investigation. Scott, who lives in East New York, was charged with grand larceny and criminal possession of stolen property, said police.

BRIGHTON BEACH – Police are looking for the man who threw a woman to the ground as he snatched her purse in Southern Brooklyn earlier this month.

Around 5:30 pm on Thursday, October 11, the suspect approached a 57-year old woman in front of 3071 Brighton 13th Street, police said. The man snuck up on his victim from behind and attempted to steal her purse, but she fought back, clinging to her bag.

As the two struggled over the bag, the incident spilled into the street, where the suspect dragged the woman to the ground and finally stole her purse, fleeing the scene.

The woman was treated on the scene for lacerations to her elbows and knees. The thief ade off with about $40 in cash and the woman’s cell phone.
