Two Traffic Fatalities—And One Arrest—On Thursday

CROWN HEIGHTS – Early yesterday morning, another pedestrian was hit and killed by a city garbage truck. This time, however, the driver was arrested and charged.

Police got the call around 6:45 am on Thursday, October 11: a person had been struck by a vehicle at Eastern Parkway and Brooklyn Avenue. At the scene, a 37-year old man was laying in the street, with severe trauma to his head, police said. EMS arrived and pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

According to an initial police investigation, an NYC Sanitation truck was driving westbound down Eastern Parkway when the driver attempted to make a right onto Brooklyn Avenue—driving the wrong way up a one-way street. The victim was struck as he was crossing the street on foot.

The driver of the garbage truck stayed on the scene and was later arrested. Aaron Gilchrist, 33, was charged with failing to yield to a pedestrian, driving the wrong way on a one-way street, and failing to exercise due care, police said.

The identity of the deceased has been withheld pending family notification.

SHEEPSHEAD BAY – Later that night, a woman was struck and killed by a truck as she crossed a road in Sheepshead Bay.

The incident occurred around 8:00 pm at the intersection of Nostrand Avenue and Emmons Avenue, said police. The victim, Elina Sokolov, 45, was crossing Nostrand when she was hit by a Dodge Durango driven by a 57-year old man.

As the truck turned from Emmons Avenue onto Nostrand, Sokolov was hit and thrown into the roadway, said police, suffering head and body trauma. Responding EMS rushed Sokolov to Coney Island Hospital, where she was pronounced deceased.

The driver of the Dodge remained on the scene after the accident. Police are investigating the accident, but no arrests have been made as yet.

  1. Well, of course, pedestrians are the stupidest people on the planet! Know any? I notice that they walk around like they own the place! Nothing can touch them because even when they break the law, they’re still “in the right”!!! Now the two dead individuals mentioned in this article may have been fully in the right, but they did not recognize that 10-50% of drivers are also complete degenerates. Oh well…

ALWAYS look over your shoulder! ASSUME drivers will do whatever the f*** they want! And if it’s gonna take a car a second or two to go through an intersection or turn, and you, as a pedestrian are gonna take 5-20 seconds to STROLL through the intersection – let ’em go…. or DIE!!!

  2. You are an insensitive jackass with no understanding of human tragedy whatsoever.
Karma is a bitch, it might not be a car but an icicle or a loose brick or a cherry pit. Be kinder!

  3. Yes cars should always yield, but DON’T BET YOUR LIFE ON IT. Please don’t jaywalk in the darkness on a rainy day. Please stand on the sidewalk and not the active roadway. Don’t park your stroller in the road when waiting for the light to turn. Never ever jaywalk with small children in tow, they are hard to see. Bikers please put lights on so you can be seen and yielded too, and stop at red lights so you don’t cause an accident. Basically don’t make it hard for drivers to see you. Don’t surprise a driver by being in the middle of a road at night where you shouldn’t be. Be a predictable pedestrian. You are a danger to other cars and pedestrians when you jaywalk carelessly in active roadways expecting people to yield. Not everyone has good vision and good reaction times. Crosswalks are great.
I will say this again. Yes cars should yield, but don’t ever bet your life on it.
