The Barnacle Parade Returns To Commemorate 6th Anniversary Of Hurricane Sandy

RED HOOK – The fifth annual Barnacle Parade returns on Monday, October 29 to commemorate the anniversary of Hurricane Sandy flooding the streets of Red Hook. Despite the tragedy and destruction caused by the storm in 2012, the event is a fun, raucous, and very Red Hook affair.

Launched by a group of neighbors in 2013—the year after the storm brought a 12-foot surge into the neighborhood—the parade celebrates the unity that brought locals together during the lengthy recovery process.

Last year’s parade, which fittingly took place during a torrential downpour, was the first time the organizers hosted a fundraiser to help others who have been impacted by recent storms. Nearly $6,000 was raised in merchandise sales and a raffle and donated to two organizations assisting with recovery efforts in Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria.

They’ll be raising funds again this year for those impacted by Hurricanes Florence and Michael in Florida and North Carolina through t-shirt sales and another raffle with prizes donated from local businesses. Check out The Barnacle Parade’s Facebook page for details on what’s on offer.

Each year the parade features one main float—in 2017 the Statue of Liberty rowing a canoe. With a “Godzilla” theme this year, the 2018 float and t-shirts feature the giant reptilian beast.
