Rent Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe’s Former Clinton Hill Home For $8K/Month

CLINTON HILL – In Patti Smith’s 2010 bestselling, award-winning memoir, Just Kids, the punk icon documented her time living in a “seedy” Clinton Hill apartment with the photographer Robert Mapplethorpe.

The two struggling artists moved into the second floor apartment of 160 Hall Street (between Myrtle & Willoughby Avenues) in 1967 while Mapplethorpe was studying at the nearby Pratt Institute. Mapplethorpe struck up a deal with the landlord to clean and paint the apartment in exchange for putting down only one month’s deposit instead of two, Smith wrote. The pair paid $80 a month for rent, or the equivalent of $600 today, according to the New York Post.

Today, the asking rent for the entire townhouse is $8,000 a month.

Of course the 3,500-square-foot residence has been extensively renovated since the creative couple’s time there. The home is being listed by Brooklyn Properties. Click on the link to see photos.

Originally built in 1901, the three-story home (plus a full basement) currently features 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms with original pine floors, exposed oak beams, painted brick walls, and large wood-latticed windows.

Along with air conditioning, zoned heating, and LED lighting, the home also boasts two walk-in closets and two outdoor spaces—a back yard and a roof deck.
