Every week, hundreds of our hungry neighbors will wait in line outside of CAMBA’s Beyond Hunger Emergency Food Pantry as they wait to receive a few bags of nutritious food that will last them the week. Across the borough, hundreds of thousands more are facing their own food insecurity: Feeding America estimates that 20% of Brooklyn residents, many of them children, are unsure of when and where they’ll get their next meal, a figure that is higher in Brooklyn than anywhere else in the five boroughs and is equivalent to 500,000 residents.

Once clients enter the pantry’s doors, they are greeted warmly by CAMBA’s staff who direct them to a supply of fresh vegetables and food essentials for the week. Staff like Barbara Diaz, acting pantry coordinator, are proud to provide groceries to guests every week, but this week will be even more special as turkeys are distributed just in time for the holiday.

Clients like Josette beam as Barbara hands them the heavy bag containing the turkey. “I can’t wait to get started cooking Thanksgiving for my family!” Josette says as she waves farewell to the food pantry staff.

Barbara says that CAMBA’s food pantry provides clients with more than just a place to get a meal. “We love what we do, and we treat everyone here as we would like to be treated,” she said. Barbara and her staff of volunteers, including beloved volunteer Neila Pierre, exude kindness towards all guests of the food pantry, easing the stresses that accompany living with hunger and poverty.

CAMBA is here to provide,” Barbara says of their work at the Beyond Hunger Emergency Food Pantry. “We’re here to make sure everyone goes home with something a little special.”

For the fifth year in a row, CAMBA has run a “500 Turkeys for 500 Families” campaign to make sure the Beyond Hunger Emergency Food Pantry is able to continue making Thanksgiving special for families in need. Turkeys will be distributed to as many families as the pantry has the funds to provide for.
