Multiple Murders Mark the First Weekend of May
Along with the shooting death and subsequent arrest of a suspect in Boreum Hill over the weekend, three more tragic murders took place in the first full weekend of May, scattered across the borough.
FLATLANDS – A suspect is in custody today after a Flatlands man was found murdered in his apartment at the Philip Howard Houses yesterday morning, his throat slashed in what may be an act of patricide.
Police responded to a 911 call of an unconscious male at 1655 Flatbush Avenue around 10:30 am on Sunday, May 6. At the location, they found the body of 43-year old resident Troy Jones, unconscious and unresponsive with trauma to his neck, said police. EMS arrived and pronounced Jones dead at the scene.
Police opened an investigation into the murder, and later that same night, arrested his 23-year old son, Tymear L. Jones, charging the man with murder and criminal possession of a weapon.
Troy Jones’ body was found by his mother, who was sleeping in the next room when the brutal murder occurred, sources told the New York Post. The elderly woman was unaware of the murder as she slept, but police sources told the Post that Tymear Jones used a “heavy duty” survival knife to stab his father in the neck.
“It looks like he tried to decapitate him,” a source said to the outlet.
BROWNSVILLE – The day before the grisly murder in Flatlands, a shooting in Brownsville killed one man and sent another to the hospital in the early evening.
Around 6:45 pm on Saturday, May 5, gunshots rang out on the 900-block of Mother Gaston Boulevard, near Linden Boulevard. NYPD officers responded to a 911 call of an assault to find a 19-year old shot in the torso in front of 903 Mother Gaston, with another victim down the block at 909 with a graze wound to his back, said police.
Both men were transported to Brookdale Hospital, where the 19-year old shot in the torso was pronounced deceased. The victim with the graze wound was treated for his injuries and is expected to recover, said police.
So far, the names of the victims haven’t been released, pending family notification. An investigation into the shooting is underway, though no arrests have been made.
