Happy Independence Day! What’s Open & Closed On July 4th
Happy Independence Day! If you’re staying in NYC today, here’s everything you need to know for the July 4th holiday.
The 4th of July means fireworks, and Brooklyn has some great views of the pyrotechnics. If you’re sticking around the city for the festivities, check out our 2018 fireworks guide.
Don’t forget some city services are closed today.
Here’s what you need to know, via nyc.gov:

- City government offices, including the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), courts, IDNYC enrollment centers, and libraries will be closed on Wednesday for the holiday.
- Mail will not be delivered on Wednesday.
- Parking meters and alternate side parking are suspended on Wednesday. No stopping, no standing, and no parking regulations are suspended, except where those regulations are in effect seven days a week or anytime.
- There will be no garbage, organics, or recycling pickup on Wednesday, July 4. If Wednesday is your regular garbage or organics collection day, put these items out after 4pm on Wednesday. Organics will be collected on Thursday, July 5. Garbage will be collected beginning Thursday, July 5 (in some areas, garbage may not be collected until your next collection day). If Wednesday is your regular recycling day, your recycling will be picked up next week, Wednesday, July 11.
- New York City subways and buses will operate on a Saturday schedule on Wednesday, July 4. There will be no 6 or 7 express service. B trains will not run and the MTA encourages customers to take the A, C, D, and/or Q instead. On Wednesday, July 4 the LIRR, Metro-North, and Staten Island Railway will operate on Sunday schedules. - The NYC Ferry will operate on a weekend schedule, but service on the East River and the Astoria routes will end early for the Macy’s Fireworks display on the East River. For the East River route, the last Wall St./Pier 11 departure bound for E.34th Street will be at 1:38pm and the last E.34th St departure bound for Wall St./Pier 11 will be at 2:39pm. For the Astoria route, the last Wall St./Pier 11 departure bound for Astoria will be 1:49pm and the last Astoria departure bound for Wall St./Pier 11 will be 2:34pm. Go to ferry.nyc for more info.
