Bomb Squad Called To Park Slope Restaurant Palo Santo Over ‘Suspicious Grenade’
The food and drinks are what usually cause all the excitement at Palo Santo, located at 652 Union Street (between 4th and 5th Avenues).
However, late Saturday night was out of the ordinary for the eating establishment which just celebrated their 10th anniversary.
Cops were summoned to the eatery at approximately 12:23am early Sunday morning, December 11 after an employee spotted what appeared to be a grenade, a police spokesperson told BKLYNER.
The incident followed a Saturday night birthday party, said Palo Santo owner Jacques Gauthier. “Someone on the staff found it when he was sweeping up, and didn’t want to put it in the garbage,” he said.
Cops followed protocol by calling in the bomb squad, who “deemed the device fake,” said a police spokesperson.
Gauthier said the “grenade” was simply a “gag gift” from the party. He added that — just like the police — the restaurant wanted to follow protocol.
Some neighbors were concerned by the police activity evident from outside on the street:
The bomb squad showed up after patrons had left for the evening, so there was no need for evacuation.
This is the second recent bomb scare incident in Park Slope, following a “piece of PVC pipe” which was deemed safe by the bomb squad during a November 20 incident at 5th Avenue and 10th Street.
So no need to be concerned about any dangerous threats. Rather, we recommend that you head over to Palo Santo for a meal this holiday, as we named the restaurant one of the top 6 places in Park Slope to take your out-of-town guests.
We’ll drink a Michelada to that.
