BKLYNER Wins 4 Independent Press Awards
BKLYNER received four awards at the 15th Annual Ippies Journalism Awards at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism last night. We were awarded first place for investigative and in-depth reporting, first place and third place for social issues reporting and 2nd place for overall site design.
The Ippies Journalism Awards from The Center for Community and Ethnic Media (CCEM) at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism celebrate the work and important role over 300 community and ethnic media outlets play throughout New York City at the neighborhood and community level. Award-winning journalist Randall Pinkston served as Master of Ceremonies and City Councilman Carlos Menchaca gave the keynote address.
Here are our stories that won:
- 1st Place, Best investigative/in-depth story, Troubling Allegations Follow Bay Ridge’s New Top Cop, Rachel Silberstein
- 1st Place, Best Social Issues story, Elementary School Principal Removed Following Outcry Over Father’s Arrest, Alex Ellefson
- 3rd Place, Best Social Issues story, Can The East 16th Street Zombie Lot Rise From The Dead?, Carly Miller
- 2nd Place, Best overall design on an online publication, BKLYNER.com
We are incredibly proud of the work that we did last year, and look forward to serving our communities, reporting on issues that matter and doing more investigative reporting, stories like the Gravesend Oil Spill, investigating out of state license plates and parking issues, and housing.
These awards are a testament to what a very small, dedicated and incredibly hard working group of individuals can accomplish, and we’d like to thank our subscribers and our advertisers for believing in us and supporting us. Our readers too – for without your feedback, comments, tips, and love we could not do what we do.
We do not have wealthy backers funding us, and depend on the support of our readers and advertisers to make ends meet. We hope you will support them in return, whether you are looking for a summer camp for your kids, or a night out, or a new place to live!
And I’d be remiss not to ask – please become a member! The more supporters we have, the more reporting we can do, and the better our neighborhood news coverage will be.
