Zara & Primark Stores To Come To Kings Plaza In 2017
Two top European retailers, Primark and Zara, will anchor reconstruction at Kings Plaza Mall in Brooklyn, which includes the transformation of the Sears building set to begin in early 2017, real estate developers announced today.
Developers at Macerich, a company that focuses on mall renovations, acquired Kings Plaza Mall in 2012. The Sears store is expected to close in mid-September, but until then, it will remain open for customers.
Primark, an Irish clothing retailer throughout Europe, has over 300 stores in 11 countries. It currently has three open stores in the U.S. – Boston Downtown Crossing, King of Prussia and Danbury Fair mall.
Zara, known for featuring on-trend apparel for women, men, and children entered the U.S in 1989 and opened its first store on New York’s Lexington Avenue. Today, Zara operates 74 stores in more than 50 cities. This will be Zara’s first Brooklyn location.
“We are very pleased that both Primark and Zara share our vision of making Kings Plaza a ‘must have’ retail location in this densely populated trade area,” said Randy Brant, Executive Vice President, Development at Macerich. “We have been pursuing this significant redevelopment opportunity since we purchased the property, and we look forward to creating, even more, value at Kings Plaza.”
The Kings Plaza redevelopment includes a three-level Primark on the north half of the building and a two-level Zara store adjacent to the mall entrance. Developers plan to make room for other high-profile retailers and restaurants.
In addition to more retail stores, the redevelopment will include a new Flatbush Avenue entrance with a four-level glass curtain wall to provide natural light inside the mall.
Other proposed features for the project consists of two new escalators and elevators, striking building façade, more space for restaurants, and exterior improvements.
“We are pleased to announce that we will be opening a store in Kings Plaza mall, an exceptional shopping destination in New York City,” said Paul Marchant, Primark Chief Executive. “This represents our 10th store in the Northeast of the United States.”
