The corner of 5th Avenue and 17th Street is getting ready to grow.

Work is now underway in the parking lot that used to belong to the now-defunct women’s department store Aaron’s, where a seven-story apartment building will soon rise. A construction fence has gone up around the property, and when we passed by the other day, a crew was on site, drilling.

Plans for the building at 236 17th Street were submitted in July of last year, and they say the building will have 17 apartments and 14 parking spaces, and will be 19,993 square feet and 70 feet tall. It won’t be a mixed-use building, so there won’t be any new commercial space coming to this block where Eagle Provisions recently announced its imminent closure. There will be a recreation space on the ground floor, a 30-foot side yard, and they’ll be adding six street trees out front.

The permit notes the developer as Nick Malafis, who The Real Deal reports has also worked on recently completed residential buildings at 683 4th Avenue and 433 3rd Avenue.

This is just one of the new apartment building projects planned for 5th Avenue. Another developer has plans to add 7,500-square-feet of apartments to the old Frost building on 5th at 19th Street.
