A 57-year-old woman was shot in the face by a stray bullet Thursday night while crossing the street in Coney Island, police say.

The victim was walking across Mermaid Avenue, near West 33rd Street, around 7:30pm when she heard gunshots and fell to the ground with pain in her right cheek. Authorities say she was shot by a stray bullet and transported to Lutheran Medicals Center where she is in stable condition.

The woman told police she saw a gun-toting man, who she described as black and wearing a hooded sweatshirt, hop into a grey sedan after the shooting. He fled west in his car.

Police say they do not believe the woman was the target of the shooting.

Cops said they took three men in for questioning last night for the incident. However, they were later released and authorities say the investigation is ongoing.
