Woman Killed By Truck At Atlantic & Flatbush Avenues
A senior was struck and killed by a dump truck while crossing Flatbush Avenue on Monday afternoon, according to the NYPD.
Police say that at 12:25pm today they responded to a call that a pedestrian had been hit, and arrived to find victim 77-year-old Winnifred Matthias of Flatbush had been struck by a 2013 dump truck which was traveling northbound on Flatbush Avenue near Atlantic Avenue. The FDNY reports she was taken to the hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival.
DNAinfo reports the woman was “walking southbound down the double yellow lines on Flatbush Avenue” when she was hit.
Police say the driver of the truck remained on the scene, and that the investigation ongoing by the Highway Collision Investigation Squad.
In April, a man was hit and killed by a tractor trailer near this intersection. According to Transportation Alternatives, Atlantic Avenue as a whole “was the site of 3 deaths and 896 injuries, including 191 pedestrians and 62 cyclists” in 2013. This particular intersection, which is an incredibly hectic one for pedestrians and drivers alike, saw three collisions in the month of September, according to the NYPD — seven people were involved, all in vehicles — no cyclists or pedestrians — and there was one injury to a passenger.
