Will The Church Avenue Subway Station Be Renovated After All?

Several months ago, it was confirmed that the Parkside, Beverley, and Cortelyou subway stations would be under renovation starting in September 2013. A few commenters were wondering why Church seemed to have gotten left out of the loop.

Although Church may look a bit rough around the edges, Community Board 14 District Manager Shawn Campbell told us it had been renovated more recently than the others, and had scored higher in a condition assessment than the other stations in question.

However, at the last Community Board 14 meeting, Councilmember Eugene got up to inform the crowd that a neighbor had recently appealed to him about renovating the Church Avenue station. Specifically, he said, he wanted to make the station more accessible to seniors. Eugene even said if he couldn’t secure funding elsewhere, he would use his capital budget.

Out of all the stations being renovated, the space at Church makes it seem like the most feasible place to add elevators and/or ramps, and since more than double the amount of riders use Church than Cortelyou, maybe it’s the most necessary place to add them as well.

So, would you support the Church Avenue station being renovated, or would it just be another wrench in your commute? Do you suppose it would be possible to keep the station functional during the renovations, given how large it is, and its multiple entrances? And, well, what do you think the chances are of it actually happening?
