No one needs an excuse to eat tacos and drink margaritas, but when the opportunity arises, who could say no? Especially here in Fort Greene and Clinton Hill, where there are so many options to choose from. So today, Cinco de Mayo, while you’re paying a visit to your favorite local taqueria, don’t forget to toast to the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France in the Battle of Puebla!

FORT GREENE

pequena fort greene

Pequeña (86 South Portland Avenue) — This lively cantina from local restauranteurs Ben and Chelsea Altman is kid-friendly, affordable and chock full of personality to go along with the tacos, enchiladas, tortilla soup, poblanos, and other Mexican fare. They also have daily happy hour ($5 margaritas!) from noon to 7pm.

El Toro taqueria tacos

El Toro Taqueria (89 Fort Greene Place) may look like a hole in the wall, but their food is bursting with flavor. Get three tacos or enchiladas with rice and beans for $10.50, or opt for a burrito and salad. We’re particular fans of the chicken mole filling. The hibiscus agua fresca is pretty refreshing, too.

mo's bar

Mo’s Bar (80 Lafayette Avenue) is known for their Taco Tuesdays and, hey, Cinco de Mayo falls on a Tuesday this year! So go to town on the $12 all-you-can-eat tacos and wash it down with one of their holiday drink deals.

Habana Outpost

Habana Outpost and Habana To Go (757 Fulton and 690 Fulton) sort of epitomize the idea of a festive community space, all bright communal tables and neighborhood events. Known for their corn elotes dusted with cheese, Habana Outpost also features a growing menu of solid family-friendly food.

CLINTON HILL

Taqueria Tepango (568 Myrtle Avenue) is a great low-key, great food type of neighborhood spot. Try the $5 super taco which includes chips, guacamole and pico de gallo. Their round burritos will also make your jaw drop.

Cochinita (922 Fulton Street) is awesome not just for their food and vibrant atmosphere, but because they are so darn family-friendly! School trips and next-door neighbors mingle seamlessly.
