Where Is Parking Allowed by the New Bus Shelter on Cortelyou?

There’s a new bus shelter on Cortelyou at the northwest corner of Stratford, which Chris the Flatbush Gardener noticed was being installed last week. It’s not completely finished–it still needs the stop name and ads–but it doesn’t look like any additional signage will be put in place, which might be unfortunate for some drivers who try to park nearby.

As you can see in the photos above, perhaps because the bus stop seems far enough away, people often park in front of the tree, before the house’s driveway. Antonio Rosario noted on Twitter:

People get tickets when they park next to that big tree. It’s not clear that that’s also the bus stop.

The city’s explanation for a bus stop sign:

The sign indicates which bus routes stop at this location, their destination and the bus stop address. No standing regulations apply. This means that you may NOT wait or stop to load/unload packages or merchandise at curbside. You may stop to expeditiously drop off or pick up passengers.

The city doesn’t explain how drivers should know where the bus stop ends, but several websites about NYC parking tickets suggest that the bus stop zone goes from the bus stop sign until the next NYC parking sign, or, if there’s no sign, it extends to the end of the block…whether or not you feel you’re parked far enough away from the stop for a bus to fit.

The next sign on the block past the bus stop is beyond the house’s driveway–and its pole is twisted, so you can’t even tell which way it’s supposed to be pointing. That sign restricts parks from midnight to 3am on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

So don’t park in front of that tree! Have any of you gotten a ticket for parking there?
