Thanksgiving is about family, graciousness, and appreciation. But most of all, it’s about food. And while the holiday is hardly around the corner, there’s a lot of planning that goes into the meal so it seems like a good idea to start talking about it now.

A lot of the fussing will center around main courses like turkey, stuffing, and mashed potatoes. (Though plenty of Brooklynites will spice their table with their own heritage and customs on November 26.) But you can’t forget about the sweets that follow one of the year’s most celebrated meals. And often, if you are not the host, it falls on you to bring dessert.

Fortunately, Sheepshead Bay is home to more than a few great bakeries. And they cover a cultural spectrum as diverse as the neighborhood. Safir Bakery (2724 Avenue U) said it’s Turkish baklava is especially popular during the holidays. Baku Bakery, the Azeri shop that reopened at 1903 Avenue U this summer, said they can provide honey, walnut or almond cakes to top off your Thanksgiving meal. Ka Ka Bakery (1505 Avenue U) is certainly a go-to if you want to decorate your table with some sweet custard tarts. C&L Bakery (1412 Avenue U) recommended their fruit cake, with honeydew melon, mango and strawberries. Vito’s Bakery and Grocery (1916 Avenue U) said they will have some of the more traditional Thanksgiving pies (pumpkin, pecan, and apple crumb, to name a few), as will T & D bakery (2307 Avenue U), which recommended their pecan, pumpkin or coconut-crusted pies. And if you’re looking to really impress, you can always order one of the signature cakes at Kiev Bakery (2666 Coney Island Avenue).

Rather than make our own recommendation (It’s a tough choice), we decided to let our readers crown a champion for holiday sweets. Make your vote below, and if we missed anyone, let us know in the comments! Hopefully, your votes will help neighbors prepare for the holidays.
