What: With her ethereal yet powerful vocals, singer-songwriter Lily Virginia seamlessly blends indie folk Americana with catchy pop hooks for a sound that’s equal parts Bon Iver and Fleetwood Mac. Her candid, confessional lyrics convey a raw vulnerability as her songs move from hushed and intimate to rousing and anthemic in the space of a breath. FDNY Open House Tour of Engine Company 210

Where: Engine Company 210 at 160 Carlton Avenue
What: Bravely serving NYC for 150 years, the FDNY’s Engine Company 210 is hosting an open house and everyone of all ages is welcome. Find out what our local engine company is up to and get some fire safety tips, take a tour, see demonstrations, explore FDNY career opportunities or just say thanks.

UrbanGlass Open Studios
When: Saturday, May 2 from 1-6pm
Where: UrbanGlass at 647 Fulton Street
What: See exciting Glassblowing demonstrations or take advantage of a unique opportunity for hands on glass work. For 30-minutes, work one-on-one with an artist for a crash-course in the basics of glassblowing or flameworking. You will leave having crafted your own handmade glass object.  We also have kiln forming activities for all ages, along with a free bead stringing activity using some handcrafted glass beads.

Target First Saturday

Where: Brooklyn Museum at 200 Eastern Parkway
What: Join us for Target First Saturdays and enjoy engaging and eclectic free art and entertainment programs every month, from 5 to 11 p.m. Michelin-starred Saul restaurant and bar is open all evening. The Counter café serves sandwiches, salads, and sweets, as well as wine and local beer. Parking is a flat rate of $5 starting at 5 p.m. (All other Saturdays, we close at 6 p.m.)

BAMcafé Live: Todd Sickafoose’s Tiny Resistors

What: Known for his extensive collaborations with artists like Ani DiFranco and Andrew Bird, bassist and composer Todd Sickafoose makes wondrously inventive, jazz-meets-post-rock soundscapes. As performed by a six-piece band that features Jenny Scheinman on violin and Grammy-nominee Alan Ferber on trombone, Sickafoose’s lushly orchestrated compositions are a kaleidoscopic swirl of ever-changing sounds and moods.

What: On the first Sunday of each month, talented children’s performers entertain babies and toddlers with music and interactive play. For May, Greenlight welcomes Big City Country, an incredible kids country band from theBrooklyn Music Factory, taught by director (and frequent Greenlight performer) Peira Moinester. Emmanuel Baptist Church Jazz Vespers

Where: Emmanuel Baptist Church at 279 Lafayette Avenue
What: As leader of The Jeff King Band and Musical director of the CBJC All Star band, Jeff continues to dig deep and explore the legacy of jazz music. He has been called a master by his contemporaries in finding and selecting music that captures the essential spirit of Jazz. He is a champion of “The Brooklyn Sound” and what he calls “New Jazz Standards”. Part of the 16th Annual Central Brooklyn Jazz Festival

Mapping Brooklyn
When: LAST WEEKEND, Through May 3 from 10am-8pm daily
Where: BRIC House Gallery at 647 Fulton Street
What: The exhibition Mapping Brooklyn will juxtapose the work of contemporary artists working with maps and cartography, alongside actual historic maps. The historic maps in the exhibition will all be drawn from the Brooklyn Historical Society’s collection; there are demographic maps, fire insurance maps and more.

Fiasco Theater’s “The Two Gentlemen of Verona”
When: Through May 24
Where: Polonsky Shakespeare Center at 262 Ashland Place
What: Crackling and quick-moving, The Two Gentlemen of Verona may well have been Shakespeare’s first play. A seemingly simple tale of shifting devotions among mismatched lovers, it helped launch the enduring genre of rom-com. Yet its delightful madcap surface conceals undercurrents, as its putative hero proves a cad and a faithless friend. A beguiling, nuanced production from the theater that brought us Cymbeline, and Into the Woods to the Roundabout Theatre.
