Kids Explore: Trees

What: Learn about trees through songs, stories, and poems. Create a cool tree craft.

Teen Night: “Word!”
When: Friday, April 24 from 4:30-7pm
Where: Brooklyn Museum at 200 Eastern Parkway
What: Planned by teens for teens, this free evening at the Museum is filled with art, friends, food, and fun. One Friday of the month, we’ll highlight a special exhibition or collection, and feature related live music, dance performances, art-making, workshops, and refreshments. April’s Teen Night explores the exhibitions Chitra Ganesh: Eyes of Time and Basquiat: The Unknown Notebooks.

BAMcafé Live: The New Cookers

Where: BAM Peter Jay Sharp Building at 30 Lafayette Avenue
What: Taking their name from legendary jazz trumpeter Freddie Hubbard’s touchstone 1965 Blue Note album The Night of the Cookers, this Brooklyn-based outfit excels in hard-bop jazz with a subtle hip-hop influence. Melding old school bebop with contemporary rhythms, The New Cookers forge a bold, distinctive sound that pays tribute to their borough’s rich musical heritage. They return to the BAMcafé as part of the 16th annual Central Brooklyn Jazz Festival.

Peter Evans’ “Zebulon, Elder Ones And Period”
When: Friday, April 24 at 9pm
Where: JACK at 505 1/2 Waverly Avenue
What: Three acts on one bill. Zebulon is Peter Evans’ exploration of the rare trumpet-bass-drums format. Elder Ones is quartet performing the conceptions of vocalist/composer Amirtha Kidambi and lies nestled in a venn diagram of musical spheres and communities in New York City. Period creates a sound that exists in between the worlds of metal, free form jazz, electronics & glacial rock music.

What: Geared toward babies and toddlers, the poetry anthology Lullaby and Kisses Sweet features 30 original poems by esteemed children’s writers like Jane Yolen, Marilyn Singer, and J. Patrick Lewis. Sections on the themes of Family, Food, “Firsts,” Playtime, and Bedtime introduce the youngest readers to loving rhymes in a playful, accessible way. Illustrator Alyssa Nassner provided the cuddly, anthropomorphized animal art that makes the poems friendly and relatable! Ages 1 to 8.

What: Possessed of a soul-stirringly expressive voice, singer and guitarist Jessica Betts is equally adept at crafting catchy pop anthems and heart-tugging R&B ballads. Since taking a hiatus after bursting onto the national stage by winning Missy Elliott’s 2005 Road to Stardom reality TV show, Betts has returned to music in full force. Most recently she’s been seen as the opener for K. Michelle’s Rebellious Soul tour and, in 2014, was selected to close the BET Honors Pre-Show.

Nature Exploration: Spring Blossoms

Where: Fort Greene Park Visitor Center
What: Hiking is the ultimate way to enjoy the outdoors and a fun way to reduce stress.  Our Urban Park Ranger hiking guides will introduce you to the hidden gems of New York City. On nature exploration hikes we will discover the plants and animals that inhabit our urban forest at a leisurely pace on mostly paved paths. Wear comfortable shoes or boots, and packing water and a light snack.

Book/Plate Series: Amanda Vaill

Where: Peck’s Homemade at 455A Myrtle Avenue
What: Book/Plate is a literary/culinary series in partnership with Peck’s Homemade, which pairs new books with complementary cuisine for a unique dinner with the author. New York-based biographer and historian Amanda Vaill has created a narrative of love and reinvention that is, finally, a story about truth: finding it out, telling it, and living it—whatever the cost. Tonight’s dinner will feature a menu inspired by the glamorous yet earthy Spain of Hemingway and his journalist cohorts – including, of course, plenty to drink. Amanda will regale guests with the true stories and characters discovered in her research and will sign books following the dinner.

Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra concert

What: The Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra continues its 41st season with works by twentieth-century composers Michael Tippett (Ritual Dances from “The Midsummer Marriage”) and William Walton (“Belshazzar’s Feast”).

Mapping Brooklyn

What: The exhibition Mapping Brooklyn will juxtapose the work of contemporary artists working with maps and cartography, alongside actual historic maps. The historic maps in the exhibition will all be drawn from the Brooklyn Historical Society’s collection; there are demographic maps, fire insurance maps and more.

Fiasco Theater’s “The Two Gentlemen of Verona”

What: Crackling and quick-moving, The Two Gentlemen of Verona may well have been Shakespeare’s first play. A seemingly simple tale of shifting devotions among mismatched lovers, it helped launch the enduring genre of rom-com. Yet its delightful madcap surface conceals undercurrents, as its putative hero proves a cad and a faithless friend. A beguiling, nuanced production from the theater that brought us Cymbeline, and Into the Woods to the Roundabout Theatre.
