First Prize Pies Cookbook Tasting


When: Saturday, March 15, 4pm to 5pm
Where: Powerhouse on 8th, 1111 8th Avenue, between 11th and 12th Streets
What: Friday may have been Pi Day, but Powerhouse on 8th is extending the party into Saturday as they honor pies of a different sort. Author Allison Kave will be on hand to sign copies of her book, First Prize Pies, while Melissa Vaughan, co-author of The New Brooklyn Cookbook, whips up some of the delicious First Prize Pies recipes.

The Art Of Lina Hsiao
When: Saturday, March 15, 9pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: Explore the works of artist Lina Hsiao this weekend at Freddy’s. An opening reception is scheduled for Saturday at 9pm, but the show runs through April 13.

Where: Toby’s Public House, 686 6th Avenue at 21st Street
What: Our neighbors at Toby’s Public House are celebrating six years in South Slope this weekend with all sorts of fantastic specials.Stop by, raise a glass, and nosh on some stellar pizza.

Old Man Gilly And Friends
When: Saturday, March 15, 5pm to 7pm
Where: Mary’s Bar, 708 5th Avenue at 22nd Street
What: Wind down with Mary’s this Saturday as Old Man Gilly and Friends play classic acoustic folk music.
How much: No cover.

Brooklyn St. Patrick’s Day Parade
When: Sunday, March 16, 1pm
Where: The route starts at 15th St and Prospect Park West, travels down 15th St to 7th Ave, along 7th Ave to Garfield Pl, up Garfield Pl to PPW, and then back along that to 15th St.
What: The 39th annual parade celebrates all that is Irish, as bands, bag pipes, step dancers, and more take to the streets. Prior to the parade’s start, a re-dedication ceremony to 9/11 heroes and victims will take place in Bartel-Pritchard Square at 12:45pm.

Film Screening: Viramundo
When: Sunday, March 16, 4pm
Where: Barbes, 376 9th Street at 6th Avenue
What: See the documentary that follows musician Gilberto Gil as he embarks on a new kind of world tour through the southern hemisphere.
How much: $5 suggested donation

Marek and the Boss Chops
When: Sunday, March 16, 10pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: Looking for a little boogie honky tonk?  How about some early rock & roll? Don’t missMarek and the Boss Chops, performing at Freddy’s Sunday night.
