Artists Roundtable: Art, Activism and the Black Body

What: For many years, the Brooklyn Museum has exhibited works by contemporary artists who have examined how the black body is placed, in social, political, and historical terms. What are activist artists saying now, in light of the recent fatalities of black men and women and subsequent civil unrest? What role do museums have in addressing these issues? Join us for a conversation on the artist’s role in social protest with dissident artist Dread Scott, multimedia artist Rashaad Newsome, Brooklyn-based street artist Tatyana Fazlalizadeh, and Ferguson, Missouri, activist artist Damon Davis.

Community Conversation: History of Racial Violence in America
When: Sunday, April 19 at 7pm
Where: JACK at 505 1/2 Waverly Avenue
What: Join local theater company Colloquy Collective and Prospect Heights Democrats for Reform for a discussion about racial violence in America, with professional actors sharing a 15-minute long anti-lynching play from 1930, “Blue-eyed Black Boy,” by Georgia Douglas Johnson, as a jumping-off point for discussion of the challenges then and now, and current pathways for justice and relief.
How much: $5-10 suggested donation to pay the artists

Mapping Brooklyn
When: Through May 3 from 10am-8pm daily, except Mondays
Where: BRIC House Gallery at 647 Fulton Street
What: The exhibition Mapping Brooklyn will juxtapose the work of contemporary artists working with maps and cartography, alongside actual historic maps. The historic maps in the exhibition will all be drawn from the Brooklyn Historical Society’s collection; there are demographic maps, fire insurance maps and more.
