BRIC: Visit to Erratic Monuments

Where: BRIC House at 647 Fulton Street
What: In conjunction with the Mapping Brooklyn exhibition, artist Katarina Jerinic leads a wandering walk through the peculiar boulders found along sidewalks and in public spaces between BRIC and Brooklyn Historical Society, offering participants a chance to explore the neighborhood landscape geologically and otherwise. Wear comfortable shoes, bring water, and dress appropriately for the weather! RAIN DATE: Sunday, March 29.

Talk: “Inside Out: Piper Lerman and Joe Loya”
When: Saturday, March 28 at 2pm
Where: Brooklyn Museum at 200 Eastern Parkway
What: In 2004, during her year in prison, Piper Kerman began a correspondence with a total stranger, Joe Loya, who had served seven years in prison for bank robberies, and who survived two years in solitary confinement through reading and writing. Loya’s memoir, The Man Who Outgrew His Prison Cell, was published that year to critical acclaim, and he was featured in the 2007 documentary Protagonist, by Oscar-winner Jessica Yu. Orange Is the New Black, Kerman’s 2010 book about her year of incarceration, has been adapted by Jenji Kohan into the award-winning Netflix series of the same name. Join Kerman and Loya for a conversation about memoir, prison narratives, and the life-saving and life-changing power of storytelling.

Women Inspiring Girls In Sports
When: Saturday, March 28 from 2-5pm
Where: LIU Brooklyn at 1 University Plaza
What: Councilmember Robert Cornegy has invited 10 influential females working in the sports industry, including Kym Hampton and Jasmine Ray, to inspire middle, high school and college students to choose sport-sector careers. This event is an opportunity for girls to learn about the kinds of jobs available in the sport industry from coaches to CEOs to marketing executives. Students will be invited to participate in panel discussions as well as one-on-one mentoring sessions.

Spring Fling Wine Tasting and BBQ
When: Saturday, March 28 from 2-8pm
Where: CrossFit Outbreak at 10 Grand Avenue
What: First annual wine tasting and BBQ. The Wine will be provided by Corkscrew Brooklyn on Myrtle Ave and the meat will be provided by Lancaster Farm Fresh Cooperative and Chef/Coach Adam Sturm will be working the grill. Lighting will be provided by urban chandy.

Stations of the Cross Exhibit
When: Through April 16
Where: Episcopal Church of St. Luke and St. Matthew at 520 Clinton Avenue
What: The 14 stations of the cross are presented by 14 Brooklyn-based artists, each working with only one restriction: uniform size.  This project resurrects a connection between the church as patron of the arts and the artists as instruments of bringing the litany to the lay population. These works are created by artists of broad ethnic and religious backgrounds including Buddhists, Catholics, Jews, and even Agnostics. As “ambassadors,” this diverse collective presents an open dialogue, with respectful interpretations of Jesus’ suffering, death, and resurrection.

Mapping Brooklyn
When: Through May 3 from 10am-8pm daily, except Mondays
Where: BRIC House Gallery at 647 Fulton Street
What: The exhibition Mapping Brooklyn will juxtapose the work of contemporary artists working with maps and cartography, alongside actual historic maps. The historic maps in the exhibition will all be drawn from the Brooklyn Historical Society’s collection; there are demographic maps, fire insurance maps and more.
