Weekend Art Events: March 29-April 1 (Dance Party, Bowie Tribute, Adult Egg-Stravaganza & More)

With the start of Passover on Friday and Easter on Sunday, this weekend will be on the quieter side, but there are some events scheduled that will benefit great causes including Imani House, the Stoneman Douglas High School Victims Fund, March For Our Lives, and the New Sanctuary Coalition NYC.

Let’s Dance! Dancing Through the Decades
When: Thursday, March 29, 6pm to 9:30pm
Where: Kings Beer Hall, 84 St. Marks Place (at 4th Ave), Park Slope
What: Dance for a good cause! This dance party benefits Imani House‘s free Youth, Family and Immigrant Education and Health Programs. There will be a DJ spinning retro R&B and contemporary tunes, early bird dance lessons, happy hour from 6pm to 7:30pm, and more.
How Much: Tickets $20 in advance, $25 at door

Film Screening: ANTIFA
When: Thursday, March 29, 7pm
Where: Interference Archive, 314 7th Street (between 4th & 5th Ave), Park Slope
What: Who are the anti-fascists? What is the history of militant anti-fascism and why is it relevant again today? This film tells the story of what “Antifa” is and why people are using these tactics to confront racism and fascism in the U.S. today. Through interviews with anti-fascist organizers, historians, and political theorists, the film explores the broader meaning of this political moment and shows scenes of street battles in Washington, Berkeley, and Charlottesville.

The Bowie Songbook with Burnt Sugar Arkestra
When: Thursday, March 29, 7pm to 9pm
Where: Brooklyn Museum, Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Auditorium (3rd floor), 200 Eastern Parkway, Prospect Heights
What: Coinciding with the David Bowie is exhibit, hear the artist’s hits reimagined in experimental soul, jazz, and hip-hop covers by Burnt Sugar the Arkestra Chamber.
How Much: Tickets $16 and include general admission to the museum

Never Again: A Night to Benefit Stoneman Douglas High School
When: Thursday, March 29 at 7:30pm to 9:30pm (doors at 7pm)
Where: The Bell House, 149 7th Street (between 2nd & 3rd Ave), Gowanus
What: A night of comedy and music, organized by Stoneman Douglas alumni (Class of 2008 and 2009), benefitting the Stoneman Douglas High School Victims Fund, Everytown, and March For Our Lives. Performers include: Seth Herzog, Mike Birbiglia, Michelle Buteau, Jo Firestone, Christian Finnegan, Lena Hall, Dave Hill, and more.
How Much: Tickets $20 in advance, $25 at door

Music & Art Benefit for New Sanctuary Coalition NYC
When: Thursday, March 29, 7:30pm to 11:30pm (doors at 7pm)
Where: Threes Brewing, 333 Douglass Street (between 3rd & 4th Ave), Gowanus
What: Musicians and artists come together in solidarity with immigrants in the U.S. and beyond, especially those threatened with deportation or detention. All proceeds will benefit the New Sanctuary Coalition NYC, an organization that provides services and protection to the most vulnerable. There will be a silent art auction with donated work by local artists and musical performances by: Sloppy Heads, Erin Durant, Woodsy Pride, and Baby Copperhead.
How Much: $10 suggested donation

ÌFÉ / M.A.K.U SoundSystem
When: Thursday, March 29, 8pm (doors at 7pm)
Where: BRIC House, 647 Fulton Street (at Rockwell Pl), Fort Greene
What: The Puerto Rico-based, African-American drummer/producer/singer Mark Underwood’s (aka Otura Roso Mun) NYC debut of his new project ÌFÉ will feature a “synthesis of electronic sound and Afro-Caribbean language.” M.A.K.U. SoundSystem will kick off the show with their “blend of traditional Latin rhythms and gritty urban sensibility.”

String Orchestra of Brooklyn: String Stories III: Meditations
When: Friday, March 30 at 8pm (doors 7pm)
Where: Roulette, 509 Atlantic Avenue (at 3rd Ave), Boerum Hill
What: The third installment of String Orchestra of Brooklyn‘s String Theories festival features meditative works using drones, masses of sound, improvisation, and time-based structures woven together into a sound installation. The program includes Tony Conrad’s Empire, Pauline Oliveros’ Tuning Meditations and 70 Chords for Terry, John Cage’s Twenty Three, and Zach Layton’s Stridulations.

Adult Egg-Stravaganza
When: Saturday, March 31, 11am to 2pm
Where: Brooklyn Boulders, 575 Degraw Street (at 3rd Ave), Gowanus
What: Tackle Brooklyn Boulders’ obstacle course featuring an Egg + Spoon Race, Lava Monster Course, and Randori Augmented Climbing. Participants can record their fastest times for a chance to win some “eggcellent” prizes. Snacks and beverages will be served.

Foam Talent | New York
When: Exhibition on view from Thursday, March 22 through Sunday, April 8
Where: Red Hook Labs, 133 Imlay Street (at Verona Street), Red Hook
What: Foam Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam and Foam Magazine present this group exhibition featuring 20 photographers from around the world whose work explores a variety of subjects and techniques. The showcased artists were selected from the annual Foam Talent Call in which 1,790 submissions were received from 75 different countries.

Composites
When: Exhibition on view from Thursday, March 22 through Sunday, April 22
Where: 440 Gallery, 440 6th Avenue (between 9th & 10th Street), Park Slope
What: 440 Gallery presents a group exhibition in its Project Space featuring the work of Leigh Blanchard, Gail Flanery, and David Stock. In Blanchard’s Study #5 (Dried Leaves) series, the artist uses scanography—scanner photography, to create modern digital works that reference early photographic techniques.
