Weekend Art Events: March 1-4 (Fiddler on the Roof, Oscar Party & More)

March is here! Art in DUMBO’s First Thursday Gallery Walk is happening this week as well as Brooklyn Museum’s Target First Saturday.

The students at Brooklyn Tech are putting on a production of Fiddler on the Roof, while PS 139 will be transformed into a carnival on Saturday.

For some Hollywood glitz and glam, head over to Threes Brewing on Sunday night for an Oscar viewing party.

Brooklyn Tech presents Fiddler on the Roof
When: Thursday, March 1 at 4:30pm; Friday, March 2 at 6:30pm; Saturday, March 3 at 2pm
Where: Brooklyn Technical High School, 29 Fort Greene Place (main entrance on the corner of DeKalb Avenue & South Elliott Place), Fort Greene
What: Following their presentation last year of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, the Music and Drama Department of Brooklyn Tech presents Fiddler on the Roof. The musical will feature all the classic songs as well as sets, scenery, and costumes created by students of the school.

DUMBO First Thursday Gallery Walk
When: Thursday, March 1, 6pm to 8pm
Where: Various venues throughout DUMBO
What: The first Thursday of every month, DUMBO galleries stay open late to host special events and receptions while neighborhood restaurants and bars offer specials to First Thursday attendees. Highlights this month include—LIGHT YEAR 35: Digital Fairy Tales: Chinese Stories a one-night-only, outdoor projection at the Pearl Street Triangle; an opening reception for Stan Van Steedam: New Works at Asphodel (20 Jay Street); and an opening reception for Objecthood * at the New York Studio School Sculpture Studios (20 Jay Street).

Womanly Hips Presents: Les Nubians / IGBO
When: Thursday, March 1, doors open at 7pm
Where: BRIC House, 647 Fulton Street, Fort Greene
What: The Grammy Award-winning Parisian sisters known for their unique fusion neo-soul and African rhythm-infused hip hop return to BRIC House to present Up Close & Personal, an intimate performance accompanied by live visuals and storytelling. Brooklyn-based dream-funk quartet IGBO will kick off the evening.

La France V: Les Six
When: Friday, March 2 at 7:30pm
Where: Brooklyn Historical Society, 128 Pierrepont Street, Brooklyn Heights
What: The final of this five-concert series will pay tribute to Les Six—six composers (Georges Auric, Louis Durey, Arthur Honegger, Darius Milhaud, Francis Poulenc, and Germaine Tailleffere) who captured the spirit of Paris in the 1920s by immersing themselves in Dadaism, Existentialism, and life in Montmartre. The performance features sopranos Marie Marquis and Laura Strickling, mezzo-soprano Kristin Gornstein, and baritone Steven Eddy. There will be a free pre-concert lecture at 7pm by CUNY Professor Syvia Kahan.

A Live Taping of “I Seem Fun; The Diary of Jen Kirkman Podcast”
When: Friday, March 2, doors open at 7pm
Where: The Bell House, 149 7th Street, Gowanus
What: Author and comedian Jen Kirkman presents a live taping of a solo podcast where she’ll muse about current events and her life.

Spring Revolution – L’Rain With Nancy Feast
When: Friday, March 2, 7pm to 9pm
Where: National Sawdust, 80 N 6th Street, Williamsburg
What: National Sawdust presents the Spring Revolution festival, its annual two-week celebration of the musical revolution created by Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring. Held from March 1st through March 11th, this year’s Spring Revolution celebrates the voice of women, with every night featuring female curators, artists and composers. Led by composer and multi-instrumentalist Taja Cheek, L’Rain will play a special performance as a quartet, with Ben Katz on saxophone and keyboards, Devin Starks on bass, and Buz Donald on drums an electronics.

Bobby Previte’s Rhapsody Band
When: Friday, March 2 at 8pm
Where: Roulette, 509 Atlantic Avenue (at 3rd Ave), Boerum Hill
What: Rhapsody is an acoustic, narrative song cycle incorporating written music, improvisation, and vocals to create an evening long performance. Featuring vocals accompanied by an acoustic harp, piano, acoustic guitars, drums, autoharp, harmonica, and percussion, the work takes the listener “traveling to an unknown place that subtly changes over the course of time, until in the end, they arrive at a surprise destination.”

Obscura / Gowanus II
When: On view from Saturday, March 3—Sunday, April 8
Where: Gowanus Loft, 61 9th Street, #C8, Gowanus
What: Creative production agency, The Vanderbilt Republic, presents a Photographic Moment in Camera Obscura, a 3,000-square-foot sun-powered epistemic machine that evolves, capturing an ephemeral Brooklyn panorama. Doors open to the installation every half hour. Attendees must be prepared to spend 30 full minutes in darkness. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
How Much: Free but reservations required.

PS 139 Camp Carnival
When: Saturday, March 3, 2pm to 5:30pm
Where: PS 139, 330 Rugby Road, Ditmas Park
What: PS 139 hosts an afternoon of activities spread throughout the school. Children can move from station to station and choose between all different kinds of fun activities including arts-n-crafts, face painting, carnival games, and mini music, dance or gymnastics lessons. Children should be supervised by an adult. Live performances from 4:45pm to 5:30pm in the auditorium include gymnastics, dance, and music by local artists and athletes including the Latin Dance Team, Prospect Gymnastics Team, Ezra Guitar musicians, and Alden Moves solo dance performances.

Brooklyn Museum’s Target First Saturday: Women’s History Month
When: Saturday, March 3, 5pm to 10pm
Where: Brooklyn Museum, 200 Eastern Parkway, Prospect Heights
What: Celebrate the final days of Roots of “The Dinner Party”: History in the Making (closing March 4) in an evening dedicated to intersectional feminism and the next generation of boundary-breaking female artists. Enjoy music by Bed-Stuy rapper Leikeli47, Sabine Blaizin (Oyasound), and a performance by Brown Girls Burlesque.

Jarrod Spector, Jukebox Life

Where: On Stage at Kingsborough, Leon M. Goldstein Performing Arts Center Kingsborough Community College, 2001 Oriental Boulevard, Manhattan Beach
What: Accompanied by a seven-piece band and videos taken throughout his career, Tony-nominated Spector (Frankie Valli in Jersey Boys and Barry Mann in Beautiful) takes the audience on a musical journey documenting his time on Broadway.

I, Too, Can Be Beautiful
When: Sunday, March 4, 3pm to 5pm
Where: Ground Floor Gallery,  343 5th Street, Park Slope
What: Join Ground Floor Gallery for the opening of “I, Too, Can Be Beautiful,” by artist-in-residence, Quay Quinn Wolf. Wolf created this new body of work onsite at the gallery using velvet, gold, handmade dyes, and other materials.

Watch the Oscars at Threes
When: Sunday, March 4, 7pm
Where: Threes Brewing, 333 Douglass Street, Gowanus
What: Join comic/writer/actor Kendra Cunningham and co-host Stephen Sheffer at an Oscar party at Threes Brewing. There will be Oscar trivia with awards and prizes and 10% of sales from draft beers and the “Don’t Despair” specialty cocktail (made with Yola Mezcal) will be donated to the Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund.
