New York Philharmonic Concerts in the Parks – Prospect Park
When: Friday, June 16, 8pm to 10pm
Where: Prospect Park, Long Meadow Ballfields, Park Slope
What: Alan Gilbert will conduct the New York Philharmonic in a program including Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9, From the New World, Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story, and Gershwin’s An American in Paris.

Rooftop Films: The Maribor Uprisings: A Live Participatory Film
When: Friday, June 16, 8pm
Where: MetroTech Commons, 5 MetroTech Center (between Lawrence & Bridge Streets), Downtown Brooklyn
What: Maribor, Slovenia was once a prosperous industrial city, however anger over political corruption lead to unruly revolt. In The Maribor Uprisings—part film, part discussion, and part interactive experiment—viewers participate in the protests, choosing which cameras to follow and deciding whether to join peaceful protests or rebellious crowds.

St. Jude’s Kids event at Aviator (Sponsored)

Community Art with Cecile Chong
When: Saturday, June 17, 10am to 2pm
Where: The Old Stone House at Washington Park, 336 3rd Street, Park Slope
What: Exhibiting artist Cecile Chong will teach participants how to make their own Delft-influenced artwork on paper plates, based on personal narratives and inspired by Chong’s gallery installation as well as Dutch tile replicas at The Old Stone House. Chong previously led this workshop with Sunset Park sixth graders, and some of their artwork (see photo above) is on display in the gallery alongside the artist’s.

Celebrate Immigrant Heritage Month!
When: Saturday, June 17, 10:30am to 3pm
Where: Bay Ridge Library, 7223 Ridge Boulevard (at 73rd Street), Bay Ridge
What: Celebrate Immigrant Heritage month with free arts workshops and musical performances including face painting, balloon animals, Irish music and dance, and a meet and greet with the author/illustrator Javaka Steptoe, the creator of Radiant Child: The Story of Young Artist Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Public Art and Yoga in Fort Greene Park
When: Saturday, June 17, 11am to 12pm
Where: Fort Greene Park (Myrtle Avenue at Washington Park), meet at the flag pole between the monument and Visitor’s Center, Fort Greene
What: Enjoy Blythe Cain’s public artwork Circadia while taking a free, outdoor yoga class. Circadia is an interactive, luminescent sculpture and seating system that acts as a guide to the park’s entrance. Bring a yoga mat, water, and sunscreen, and wear comfortable clothes. All levels are welcome.

Introduction to Embroidery: Tote Bags
When: Saturday, June 17, 12pm to 3pm
Where: Brooklyn Brainery Annex, 1233 Prospect Avenue, Windsor Terrace
What: Learn practical applications to embroidery. The class will focus on creating monogrammed designs for a tote bag by combining basic stitches. Students will start their projects in class and be given the materials to finish at home.

Gibney Dance Performance

Movies Under the Stars: Notorious B.I.G. Bigger Than Life

Where: Fort Green Park (movie will be screened on the lawn adjacent to Myrtle & North Portland Avenues), Fort Greene
What: Peter Spirer’s 2007 documentary about Brooklyn’s own Nortious B.I.G., featuring home video footage, an interview with the rapper shortly before his death, and undisclosed video footage from the night of his murder. Biggie’s friends and several hip-hop stars discuss his life and music.
