What: A group exhibition that examines the aesthetic and political implications of historical reenactment in contemporary art through the work of six artists of color using performance, video, and photography to unsettle cultural mythologies and origin stories.

New Location Grand Opening & Exhibition Opening of no. Not Ever.
When: Thursday, January 18, 7pm to 9pm
Where: Interference Archive, 314 7th Street (at 5th Avenue), Park Slope
What: The official re-opening of Interference Archive’s new location and opening of no. Not Ever., a multi-media, interdisciplinary, immersive installation curated by Seattle-based collaborative If You Don’t They Will that provides an anti-racist, anti-fascist framework for understanding the current rise of white nationalism. Interference Archive has drawn from its vast collection of more than 30,000 archival items to provide additional material surrounding the history of anti-fascist organizing.

CURRENTS: Abortion
When: Exhibition on view from Friday, January 5 through Sunday, February 4
Where: A.I.R. Gallery, 155 Plymouth Street, DUMBO
What: This fifth edition of CURRENTS presents an exhibit in which artists respond to the theme of abortion. The exhibition includes pieces that depict choice, loss, and anger; works of fecundity, disease, shame, and pain; images of helplessness and of power. There are pieces about women who used abortifacients, as well as works with pro life and religious messages—all brought together into one space to be heard. On January 19 and 25 from 2pm to 6pm, personal abortion stories submitted to the gallery will read aloud.

Waterfront
When: Exhibition on view beginning Saturday, January 20
Where: Brooklyn Historical Society DUMBO, 55 Water Street, DUMBO
What: The culmination of four years of research and development, Waterfront is the first major exhibition focusing on the history of Brooklyn’s coastline. The exhibit and multimedia experience brings to life the vibrant history of Brooklyn’s coastline through stories of workers, artists, industries, activists, families, neighborhoods, and ecosystems.
How Much: Suggested admission is $10 for adults, $6 for seniors and teachers, and free for members and students

Audrey Chen and Phil Minton: Voices
When: Saturday, January 20 at 8pm, doors open at 7pm
Where: Roulette, 509 Atlantic Avenue (at 3rd Avenue), Boerum Hill
What: Berlin-based vocalist/cellist Audrey Chen and her collaborator Phil Minton play the most inherent and bodily instrument—the voice, producing unique improvisations. The duo will express, pronounce, and articulate the many sounds created by their mouths and vocal chords.
How Much: Tickets $15 online, $20 at door

Where: BAM, Peter Jay Sharp Building, BAMcafé, 30 Lafayette Avenue, Fort Greene
What: In conjunction with Art Action Day, BAM presents NYC’s first and only all-female full mariachi ensemble. The Latin Grammy winners, hailing from several regions of Mexico, as well as Puerto Rico, Europe, and the US, bring their fresh, boundary-breaking take on traditional Mexican music to BAMcafé.

What: Fight winter’s bitter cold at the Soup Takedown. Try all of the soups made by some of Brooklyn’s best cooks then vote for your favorite.

Brooklyn Community Chorus Winter Concert
When: Sunday, January 21, 3pm to 5pm
Where: Congregation Beth Elohim, 274 Garfield Place (at 8th Avenue), Park Slope
What: The Brooklyn Community Chorus presents their winter concert. Enjoy an afternoon of diverse music, ranging from Beethoven to Ola Gjeilo to Pentatonix.

Itty Neuhaus, Sublimation: An Iceberg’s Story

Where: Kentler International Drawing Space, 353 Van Brunt Street, Red Hook
What: A large-scale installation of drawing, photography, and video projection inspired by the artist’s experience in the Arctic Fulbright Initiative featuring a free-hanging, thirty-foot panorama of photographic representations of arctic scenes.

Solid Light Works: Anthony McCall
When: On view from Friday, January 12 through Sunday, March 11
Where: Pioneer Works, 159 Pioneer Street, Red Hook
What: Requiring more than thirty feet of clearance from floor to ceiling, few venues in NYC are able to accommodate these colossal works which the artist describes as a combination of sculpture, cinema, and drawing. The six vertical and horizontal light installations will fill Pioneer Works’ massive main hall, which will be completely blackened out and immersed in haze.
