Weekend Art Events: April 12-15 (Hungarian Rock, Festival of Mali, Tango & More)

It’s the weekend again! There are lots of musical performances happening this week including an Eastern European folk concert and a celebration of MCs and poets in Fort Greene, a record release party and a Malian music fest in Williamsburg, and a classical concert fundraiser in Park Slope.

The Knights: Hungarian Rock Evening Concert | Black Sea Hotel
When: Thursday, April 12, 8pm
Where: BRIC House, 647 Fulton Street, Fort Greene
What: For the season’s final installment of BRIC House Sessions, BRIC presents Hungarian Rock, featuring new arrangements of Johannes Brahm’s Hungarian Dances and a world premiere arrangement of György Ligeti’s Hungarian Rock by Michael P. Atkinson of the orchestral collective, The Knights. Black Sea Hotel will perform an opening set.
How Much: Tickets $18 in advance, $23 at door

Where: BAM Fisher, 321 Ashland Place, Fort Greene
What: Some of the best hip-hop MCs and poets from Brooklyn and beyond will be featured at this annual event hosted by MC Baba Israel. This spring’s showcase celebrates the world from a woman’s point of view. The lineup includes poet Ashley August; MCs Cipherella, LATASHA, and Medusa; musician Yako440; and DJ Reborn. Gowanus Canal Shoreline Art Walk
When: Saturday, April 14, 11am to 1pm
Where: Meet at the entrance to Smith-9th Street subway station, 37 9th Street, Gowanus
What: Join the Gowanus Dredgers for a brisk walk along the Gowanus shoreline to celebrate the neighborhood’s creativity and quirky art scene. The walk explores the area’s history, anticipated changes, and how to get involved in ensuring neighborhood growth supports the dynamics between business, art, and recreation.
How Much: $25 contribution per person

Afro-Asian Storytime at Radical Playdate
When: Saturday, April 14, 3pm to 5pm
Where: Interference Archive, 314 7th Street (at 5th Avenue), Park Slope
What: Guests from Callaloo: Cultural Literacy for Kids and Sari-Sari Storybooks will read selections of Afro-Asian storybooks at this event that will also feature a craft table and toys. There will be a Q&A session with the authors of the books.
How Much: $5 suggested donation

Festival of Mali | Sidi Touré
When: Saturday, April 14 through Monday, April 16
Where: Brooklyn Bowl, 61 Wythe Avenue, Williamsburg
What: World Music Institute presents the three-day Festival of Mali, featuring a performance Saturday night (April 14 at 8pm) by the acclaimed Songhaï Music performer, Sidi Touré, whose “danceable, dynamic and joyous” music is influenced by Malian culture and traditions.
How Much: Tickets $20 per night or $56.25 for a three-day pass

What: Violinist, composer, and bandleader, Majid Khaliq’s music is “defined by its angelic string sounds, aboriginal electric bass grooves, [and] lush harmonic textures” featuring a mix of acoustic and electric sounds and hip-hop influenced beats. The artist celebrates the release of his latest album, Sound of a Flower with a performance featuring special guests Squala Orphan, Sfumato Symphony Orchestra, and Cyrus Aaron (poet/activist/tv personality).

Tango Lovers’ Gold Label
When: Saturday, April 14 at 8pm
Where: On Stage at Kingsborough, 2001 Oriental Boulevard, Manhattan Beach
What: Experience the excitement of tango performed by world champion tango dancers. Act I recalls Buenos Aires’ Golden Age of tango with the dances, songs, and fashions of the 1940s and 1950s, while Act II showcases contemporary metropolitan tango.

Concerts on the Slope’s 2018 Fundraiser Gala Concert!
When: Sunday, April 15 at 3pm
Where: St. John’s Episcopal Church, 139 St. John’s Place (at 7th Avenue), Park Slope
What: Multiple musicians will donate their time and talent to this gala concert to benefit Concerts on the Slope, which will help the program raise funds for rent, recording royalties, and other expenses. Performances will include Leos Janáček’s String Quartet No. 1, Kreutzer Sonata; Tania León’s Toque; and Franz Schubert’s Piano Trio No. 2 in E-flat Major.
How Much: Tickets $40, $25 students (include a wine and hors d’oeuvre reception with the musicians following the program)

Arianna String Quartet—Haydn and Mozart String Quartets
When: Monday, April 16 at 12:30pm
Where: St. Francis College, Founders Hall, 180 Remsen Street, Brooklyn Heights
What: “Composers of the First Golden Age of Viennese Music” will close out the Spring 2018 season of the Concerts at Half-Past Twelve series with the St. Louis-based Arianna String Quartet performing work by Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
How Much: Free and open to the public

When: Exhibition on view from Thursday, March 22 through Sunday, April 22
Where: 440 Gallery, 440 6th Avenue (between 9th & 10th Street), Park Slope
What: 440 Gallery presents a group exhibition in its Project Space featuring the work of Leigh Blanchard, Gail Flanery, and David Stock. In Blanchard’s Study #5 (Dried Leaves) series, the artist uses scanography—scanner photography, to create modern digital works that reference early photographic techniques.
