Looking for something fun to do in the neighborhood this week? There are plenty of interesting events within walking distance, from a talk on gentrification in Brooklyn, to a free film noir screening, to a discussion between two Pulitzer Prize winners. Details on those, and more:

Brooklyn Transitions: History Of Gentrification In Brooklyn

Where: Central Library, InfoCommons Lab, 10 Grand Army Plaza
What: A panel of dynamic Brooklyn thinkers — Sharon Zukin, Suleiman Osman, and Isabel Hill — will discuss the historical patterns of change in the neighborhoods of the borough, giving an account of the reasons for and ramifications of gentrification over the years.

Film Screening: The Big Sleep

Where: Central Library, Dweck Center, 10 Grand Army Plaza
What: Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall star in this Howard Hawks film, the first version of Raymond Chandler’s 1939 novel of the same name. So noir.

Brooklyn By The Book: Marilynne Robinson
When: Wednesday, October 22, 7:30pm
Where: Congregation Beth Elohim, 274 Garfield Place
What: Marilynne Robinson’s new novel Lila returns to the characters and setting of her Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, Gilead, in telling the story of a woman’s struggle to build a home and family after years living on the fringes of society. She’ll be in conversation with Paul Harding, Pulitzer-Prize winning author of Tinkers.
How much: Tickets are $10 ($7 for CBE members/Brooklyn Public Library card holders), or $35 with a copy of Lila ($32 for CBE members/BPL card holders) , and are available in advance.
