BOOKISH: Writers Talking

Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Join Kensington novelist Amy Shearn as she hosts a brand new interview series at the Park Slope Library. This week, Spinster: Making A Life of One’s Own author, Kate Bolick, will discuss “the joys and discomforts of unmarried life, the underrated pleasures of solitude, the legacies of her literary ‘awakeners’ like Edna St Vincent Millay and Edith Wharton, and one of the central questions of her book: ‘Are women people yet?’”

The Fancy Show

Where: Bar Reis, 375 5th Avenue
What: This weekly stand-up comedy series is “100% free (no drink minimum) and contains 100% good times.” Plus, they even give away some free drinks with those laughs!

Soft Spot: A Comedy Show
When: Tuesday, May 26, 9pm
Where: Threes Brewing, 333 Douglass Street
What: A night of comedy in the little room upstairs at the brewery, featuring Wyatt Cenac, Aparna Nancherla, Jared Logan, Chris Laker, Janelle James, and hosted by Claudia Cogan and Brendan McLaughlin.
How much: $5 at the door.
A Badass Bash: Party For The Pups
When: Wednesday, May 27, 7pm
Where: Littlefield, 622 Degraw Street
What: Want to make sure the local dog rescue Badass Brooklyn has the funds to help pups find homes? This is the party for you, where there will be food, drinks, music, a live auction with great prizes, and even a few dogs to meet.
How much: $75-$500, tickets available in advance, with proceeds going to benefit the organization.
Author Reading: Judith Wellman
When: Wednesday, May 27, 7pm
Where: Central Library, Dweck Center, 10 Grand Army Plaza
What: The author will discuss her book, “Brooklyn’s Promised Land: The Rise, Loss, and Rediscovery of the Remarkable Community of Weeksville, 1830-1915,” which covers the history of the Brooklyn area purchased by African Americans following the end of slavery in New York in 1827.

Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz
When: Wednesday, May 27, 8:30pm
Where: The Rock Shop, 249 4th Avenue
What: Teams of up to six players will compete for bar gift certificates and bragging rights, plus there are chances to win free pints (or gift-certificate equivalents) for answering five bonus questions throughout the evening, and there are some kinds of “bizarre prizes” for their weekly Bonus Email Question.

Dollars To Degrees: Funding Your Child’s Education
When: Thursday, May 28, 6-7:30
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue
What: We all know college is expensive (really expensive), but financial planner and wealth advisor, Mina Black’s, Thursday workshop should help ease some of your anxiety. Black will discuss “ways to pay for college using saving plans, financial aid, work study, and loans as well as the differences and advantages between different college savings vehicles.”
