Cafe Society [Through Thursday]

Where: Peter Jay Sharp Building at 30 Lafayette Avenue
What: Woody Allen has crafted yet another love letter to the early twentieth century. This one stars Jessie Eisenberg (wither Jason Biggs?) and Kristen Stewart, with Blake Lively and Steve Carrell. Cafe Society is playing through Thursday, so take advantage!

Movie Screening: Moonstruck
When: 7pm
Where: Brooklyn Historical Society, 128 Pierrepont Street
What: Cher’s Academy Award-winning performance in Norman Jewison’s classic 1987 romantic comedy. Grab a Brooklyn Brewery beer, a Shake Shack custard, then sit back and enjoy the blossoming romance, introduced by Slate’s Kristen Meinzer and Newsday’s Rafer Guzman.

Books Beneath the Bridge: Poetry in Performance
When: 7pm
Where: Brooklyn Bridge Park, Granite Prospect
What: Greenlight is proud to participate in the fourth season of Books Beneath the Bridge, an outdoor literature series in Brooklyn Bridge Park whose purpose is rooted in the bridging of conversations between interregional blackness & discussing what a black Mecca can look like in the United States. Poets Camonghne Felix, Thiahera Nurse, Jose Olivarez, and Paul Tran will read from new work, hosted by The Conversation’s co-founder Nabila Lovelace.

TUESDAY AUGUST 9
Book Launch: Teju Cole with Amitava Kumar at Brooklyn Voices
When: 7:30pm.
Where: Brooklyn Voices at St. Joseph’s College, 245 Clinton Avenue between Willoughby and Dekalb Avenues.
What: Nigerian American writer Teju Cole, renowned author of Open City and Every Day Is for the Thief, presents his first book of essays, Known and Strange Things, with more than fifty nonfiction pieces spanning politics, place, history, literature, photography, and art. Cole discusses his work and explorations with essayist and novelist Amitava Kumar, author of Lunch with a Bigot: The Writer in the World. Book signing to follow.

WEDNESDAY AUGUST 10
Trivia Night
When: Wednesdays from 8-11pm
Where: Putnam’s Pub at 419 Myrtle Avenue
What: Stop by for some of the best trivia in our ephemera obsessed borough. This is a weekly trivia competition with prizes like gift cards. Just as important, there are beer specials all night.
How much: Free
Celebrate Brooklyn! Labyrinth / Donny McCaslin Group
When: Wednesday at 7:30pm (gates at 6:30pm).
Where: Prospect Park Bandshell, enter at 9th Street and Prospect Park West.
What: Catch Jim Henson/Terry Jones/George Lucas’ 1986 cult classic live action fantasy LABYRINTH, featuring David Bowie as the Goblin King and young Jennifer Connelly as she searches through a mysterious maze for her kidnapped baby brother. Featuring music by Donny McCaslin Group, which backed Bowie on Blackstar.

THURSDAY AUGUST 11
Celebrate Brooklyn Benefit Concert: Herbie Hancock / Robert Glasper Experiment / Jamie Lidell & Royal Pharaohs
When: Thursday at 7:30pm (gates at 6:30pm).
Where: Prospect Park Bandshell, enter at 9th Street and Prospect Park West.
What: Herbie Hancock closes out the 2016 benefit concert season, bringing his impressive discography to life at the Bandshell with James Genus, Trevor Lawrence Jr., Lionel Loueke, and Terrace Martin.
How Much: Tickets start at $49.50
Julius Caesar Performance at Fort Greene Park
When: Thursday at 7pm to 9pm.
Where: Fort Greene Park, Myrtle Avenue Lawn.
What: Bring blankets and low chairs for Hip to Hip Theatre Company’s production of Julius Caesar, a family-friendly production is for Shakespeare fans. Seating is first-come, first-served. Stop by an hour before the show for an interactive, kids’ friendly workshop.
