This Week In Ditmas Park
This week in Ditmas Park, the battle for the Democratic Party presidential nomination came to the streets of Flatbush — the Sanders campaign opened an office here, and Sanders also spoke at a rally in Midwood Friday. In other major news, both the former commanding officer of the 70th Precinct, and a long-time 66th Precinct detective, were named In a Federal corruption probe.
Here’s a recap of what’s been happening in our neighborhood:
- Legal Services NYC announced Thursday that it had filed suit against “infamous” landlord Moshe Piller on behalf of 12 long-time tenants at 2010 Newkirk Avenue.
- Demonstrating the huge demand that exists for jobs and educational opportunities for young people, over 700 area students attended Community Board 14’s Youth Conference.
- Jahbrew Jamaican Coffee And Tea — the brainchild of a Brooklyn College grad — opened on Flatbush Avenue.
- Legendary songwriter and musician John Prine, and the eternal Dion, both played the Kings Theatre.
- Recently released census data starkly shows a center of relative economic affluence in Ditmas Park and Midwood, flanked by columns of lower-income households immediately to the west and east.
- With support from Flatbush Councilman Jumaane Williams, we are one step closer to a fee on plastic bags.
- Neither cold or wind stopped the celebration of Avenue C’s anticipated new plaza.
- It’s Spring Migration Season — and there are great ways to see the beautiful birds that are in our area.
- More residential development could be coming to Coney Island Avenue.
- A Blink gym on Flatbush Avenue was burglarized last weekend.
