After a lengthy effort, neighbors, elected officials, and representatives from the City’s Department of Transportation will gather to celebrate the new traffic signal at the corner of Caton Avenue and East 8th Street.

The traffic light will facilitate a safer crossing of Caton Avenue, especially for students at MS 839.

The new light is just feet away from the intersection at East 7th Street where 14-year-old Mohammad Naiem Uddin was killed in a hit and run on November 20th, 2014.

In a statement the day after Uddin’s death, Council Member Brad Lander noted that he had written to NYC Department of Transportation Commissioner Polly Trottenberg the week before, “asking DOT to come to our community with a plan to make this very intersection (and several nearby) safer for our kids and families. We are tragically too late for Mohammad. But we will have an obligation to honor his memory by making sure that this is never again the scene of a child’s death.”

Everyone is welcome at Wednesday’s 11:30am ribbon cutting. Elected officials will also discuss other recent pedestrian safety improvements made in Kensington and Windsor Terrace.
