Want to Help Sandy Victims Sunday? Here’s How

There are a number of places in our area that have organized ways to help Sandy victims today. Check out our list below and, if you know of anything we missed, let us know in the comments.

The shelter at John Jay is in need of volunteers on Sunday to help with consolidate their approximately 219 evacuees (starting at 9am and for up to 6 hours); individual volunteers who will be assigned to individual families to provide emotional support and help that family move their belongings to their new space within the school (somewhat later in the day). Volunteers must be strong and willing to move cots, heavy bags, clean areas for families to move in, etc. You cannot bring your children; however, they are in need of baby wipes so if you have an unopened packs that you can donate, please bring them. Congregation Beth Elohim will begin making runs to deliver supplies at about 10am, and needs these items most: blankets, boxes, non-perishables, batteries, candles, matches/lighters, water. Please note: They are not able to take any more clothes. Volunteers will be on site beginning at 8am.

The Red Hook Initiative opens on Sunday at 10am. They are in need of hot, prepared meals (mostly meats and salads) for lunch and dinner. Lunch donations need to be dropped off at 767 Hicks Street before noon and for dinner donations before 4:30pm. If you will be bringing food, please let RHI know what you are bringing and at what time by emailing food@rhicenter.org.

RHI Volunteers please report to 402 Van Brunt Street 10am – 5pm. Supplies needed: water pumps, cleaning supplies, generators.

Donations of Canned Food/ Non-perishables / Flashlights/ Candles/ Blankets for Red Hook can be delivered to Good Shepherd Services, 173 Conover Street OR Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 98 Richards Street/ Verona Street: 10am – 5pm

MS 51 is hosting a open mic Talent Relief and bake sale to benefit Hurricane Sandy victims on Sunday. Students can sign up begins at 11am to sing, dance, juggle, play music, anything. Bring baked goods to sell, stop by buy some treats or to donate money and enjoy the show. All the money raised will go to relief efforts in our community. Will go on until 1pm, or as long as people want to perform.

All the proceeds from a big stoop sale on Berkeley between 7th and 6th Avenues on Sunday at 12pm will be donated to the American Red Cross.

If you head out to drink tomorrow, make sure to stop at Pacific Standard, where they will donate $1 for each drink they sell to the Red Hook Initiative.

From noon – 4pm all week, the Monro Pub will donate $1 to the Red Cross for every donation brought in.

The Church of St. Luke and St. Matthew in Clinton Hill is collecting items every day from 9am-9pm. Most in need: blankets, candles, flashlights, water, food, batteries, diapers and wipes, gloves, masks, rubber boots, shovels, cleaning supplies, trash bags, serving dishes and utensils, and winter clothing.

Want to help with cleanup, but don’t have a car to get out to areas in need? Occupy Sandy is coordinating a volunteer effort to get workers into affected neighborhoods to help with on-the-ground cleanup. They will be transporting volunteers and supplies from St Jacobi Church in Sunset Park to impacted areas throughout the day. To catch a ride to Sunset Park, vehicles will be leaving from the following Brooklyn locations at 10am and 1pm. Please arrive a little before the hour as cars will be leaving on time!

  • Willimsburg: 190 Withers,First Fl
  • Bedstuy: 136 Jefferson Ave, apt 2
  • East Williamsburg: 342 Maujer st bay ridge.

Park Slope Parents and The Old Stone House are collecting items to distribute to areas in need today from 10am – 3pm at JJ Byrne Playground (5th Ave between 3rd and 4th). Please note that no used clothing and no donations after 3pm will be accepted. Items needed are:

  • Bleach
  • Ammonia
  • Other cleaning items
  • Face masks
  • Sponges
  • Large Garbage/Contractor bags
  • Food (canned, crackers, cookies, etc)
  • Water
  • Socks
  • Work Gloves
  • Flashlights
  • Batteries (especially AA)

There is a bake sale for local Sandy relief from 2-4 p.m. at the 9th St. entrance to Prospect Park. Funds raised will benefit Masbia, who is providing food to the evacuees at the Armory shelter. Please spread the word, come with baked goods to sell (individually bagged in paper or plastic sandwich bags would be great), plans to purchase treats, or just make donations to help support our temporary neighbors.

There are so many neighborhoods in Brooklyn and beyond hurting right now.
