Cortelyou Road

When you’re walking down Cortelyou Road, is there ever a moment when you wish there was something different? Maybe you’d like to see more frequent garbage pickups? Or you’d like some new stores? How about different activities?

Whatever you’d like, now’s the time to make your voice known!

The Cortelyou Road Merchants Association (CORMA), which stretches from E. 17th Street to Coney Island Avenue, and the Flatbush Development Corporation are working to form a Business Improvement District (BID) for Cortelyou – and, as a first step towards that, they’re encouraging community members to take this survey about ways to make our neighborhood even better.

“The results will assist CORMA’s desire to make changes that will support a clean, safe and profitable business district,” the groups wrote on their survey. “Thank you for your participation. We are excited about your feedback and incorporation your thoughts in the mission and vision of Cortelyou Road.”

If a Cortelyou BID is launched, it would join the 70-some districts throughout the city, including our area’s Church Avenue and Flatbush Avenue BIDs. A BID is a public-private partnership that helps to pay for such services as supplemental sanitation, security, marketing, business development, and more.

For example, the Church Avenue BID funded a supplemental sanitation team from the Doe Fund, who work seven days a week, seven hours a day sweeping, picking up trash, and removing snow and excess rain water. And the Flatbush Avenue BID’s recent initiatives include helping businesses reap the benefits of the crowds coming to attend the newly opened Kings Theatre and working with the Flatbush Caton Market to promote a Make Music NY concert at the market’s large sidewalk plaza.

Basically, a BID is a way for our businesses to land more financial support and other resources – which can translate to cleaner sidewalks, additional activities for the neighborhood, and more.

And if you’re still not sure you want to take the couple minutes to fill it out – you’ll be entered into a drawing for a $100 gift card if you participate!
