Waitress Sentenced To 15 Years To Life In Fatal Stabbing At Chinese Restaurant

Acting Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez announced on Tuesday that 37-year-old, mother of two, Lan Shui Yu of Sunset Park, was sentenced to 15 years to life for fatally stabbing a man at the restaurant where she was employed.

The incident occurred on February 15, 2016 at Lucky Zhang Restaurant located at 5622 8th Avenue in Sunset Park. At approximately 10pm, 44-year-old Jian Yang Zhang entered the restaurant where Yu worked as a waitress. Zhang’s brother-in-law owns the restaurant.

Seated at a table, Zhang allegedly made a comment to Yu who responded by slapping him and punching him in the head. She then grabbed a knife and stabbed Zhang in the back and in the heart, according to Gonzalez’s statement.

Zhang walked outside the restaurant where he collapsed. He was taken Maimonides Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

After the attack, Yu reportedly left the restaurant, stepping over Zhang’s body on her way out, and went to a friend’s house. When police located Yu, she told them that she stabbed Zhang because he cursed at her, Gonzalez says.

Yu pleaded guilty to second-degree murder on March 31, 2017. She was sentenced today by Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Neil Firetog.
