Volunteers armed with brooms and trash bags hit the streets of Bensonhurst in an effort to keep their neighborhood clean. According to a press release, Assemblyman William Colton, Councilman Vincent Gentile and volunteers went – brooms in hands – down 86th Street from 25th Avenue to 18th Avenue as part of their “Speak-Up & Clean-Up” campaign.

Last month, Colton and Gentile joined a group of volunteers to clean-up Milestone Park and now led nearly 50 community conscious teens to take on 86th Street. The youths, culled from local schools and organizations, also passed out fliers and spoke to residents and businesses about local sanitation rules to help raise awareness and keep the streets clean.

Gentile spoke to the simple goal of the community volunteer effort.

“The mission is simple: together we’ll roll up our sleeves and clean up our streets,” Councilman Vincent J. Gentile said in the release.  “Maybe if your neighbor sees you picking up litter, it will inspire them to be more conscious of their surroundings and they will think twice before littering next time. Our neighborhoods are our pride and joy and everyone loves a clean neighborhood, including and especially our visitors. I am happy to be teaming up with Assemblyman Colton to make this a real community-wide event!”
