Video: Track Fire At West 8th Street – New York Aquarium Subway Station

Firefighters and transit workers teamed up to battle a blaze that consumed a signal room and stretch of tracks at West 8th Street – New York Aquarium F and Q station on Friday evening, taking about three hours to squash the flames.

Tipster Elina N. sent in the above video taken just minutes after the fire erupted onto the second level. The fire originated on the roof of the signal station at approximately 6:30 p.m. and was “under control” by around 9:20 p.m. No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Those hoping to visit Coney Island had their plans bungled, though, as transit workers spent all of Saturday repairing the extensive damage, including replacing track panels, wooden track ties and part of a walkway at the station. Q service was terminated between Brighton Beach and Stillwell Avenue for most of the weekend. The F train had no service between Avenue X and Stillwell Avenue.

All trains are now operating on their regular schedules, according to the MTA.

Were your weekend plans disrupted by the fire?

  1. The fact that this track fire occurred on Friday and was reported here on Monday is the perfect reason why SHB should be a 7 days a week blog. Journalism needs no rest.

  2. Normally, stories like this would be up as it’s happening, regardless of day. Breaking news is breaking news.

Unfortunately, I was at a wedding (and recovering from it the rest of the weekend) and no one else was available to handle it. But, hey, getting it late is better than not getting it at all…

  3. It took me 2 hours to get home that night, and I was on 5 trains. My train odyssey included hearing but not actually witnessing a slap followed by a “Don’t touch me!” followed by a near brawl, in a sardine can situation. Once that settled down, we were treated to one side of a high volume conversation where some old wingnut of a lady was asking the person on the other end to meet her with a plastic bag and could she please inspect her body for bedbugs. I have never been so happy to get off a train in my life.

  4. Woah!

    that’s crazy!

Ain’t it great that there is a Fire Dept on WEST 8th, and they were there on scene in seconds, instead of minutes!

  5. Do you work on the weekends?

i don’t.   And i don’t see why Ned should either. He does enough for us during the week.

  6. Everyone should be given a one day extension on their unlimited metrocard or an additional 2 rides free due to this fire. All firefighters should be given free rides for life.
