Verizon Donates $1K To KBCC Women’s Center
Kingsborough Community College is the latest collection point to be part of Verizon Wireless’s UHopeLine, and the mobile company donated $1,000 to the school’s women’s center to help protect women from violence.
UHopeLine is a cell phone recycling program that accepts wireless devices and accessories in any condition, from any wireless service provider, and then refurbishes or recycles them in an environmentally sound way. Proceeds of the UHopeline program benefit local domestic violence survivors in the form of wireless phones with service and cash grants to domestic violence advocacy groups working to end domestic violence.
The Kingsborough collection point is one of eight UHopeLine bins placed at locations on City University of New York campuses throughout the city. Other CUNY collection points can be found at Queens College in Queens, Bronx Community and Lehman colleges in the Bronx; Medgar Evers and Kingsborough Community colleges in Brooklyn; and at Baruch and Borough of Manhattan Community and John Jay colleges in Manhattan. A permanent UHopeLine collection site will be established at the College of Staten Island by early next year, and each school has received a $1,000 grant to women’s safety programs on campus.
UHopeLine launched in October 2008 on Rutgers University campuses, and in its first year Verizon Wireless collected more than 6.5 million no longer used phones. In turn, Verizon donated nearly $7 million in grants and over 80,000 wireless phones with service to domestic violence survivors.
