Updated Ways to Help in Brooklyn

There are many who made it through the storm and are willing to help those in need. But what can be done? The good folks at Park Slope Parents have provided input about volunteer opportunities, and we’ve added some other things we’ve heard about as well.

Park Slope Armory (15th St between 7th and 8th)
Needs: Cigarettes, underwear, family-friendly activities like word games and magazines

Donation Box on 7th Ave (125 7th Avenue, at Corcoran)
Donation Boxes for babies, toddlers, and older kids displaced in Breeze Point and the Rockaways.
Needs: Clothes, diapers, food

Donate at Steve Levin’s Office (410 Atlantic)
Needs: Non-perishable food donations, but they are taking weather appropriate clothing. Lots of displaced kids, so mac and cheese, water and milk, disposable plates and cups to serve.

Food Donations at Postmark Café (326 6th Street between 4th and 5th Avenues)
Hours of operation: Monday-Saturday 7am-7pm, opens Saturday at 8am,  718-768-2613
Needs: Sugar, flour, 100% juice, canned vegetables, canned fruit, canned tuna and chicken, soup, pasta sauce, pasta, rice, beans, boxed milk with a shelf life, cereal, oatmeal, coffee, tea.

Lunch Prep at Congregation Beth Elohim
November 2-4
Needs: People to prep lunch for distribution at local shelters. Anyone over the age of 9 is welcome, and there are a number of shifts. Learn more and sign up here.

Collection for Hurricane Relief, Tea Lounge (837 Union St)
Tonight, 8:30-11:30pm
Needs: Money. The regular Brooklyn Raga Massive Jam Session will be collecting for hurricane relief.

Prospect Park
November 2-4
Needs: Money and volunteers. Donations raised by walkers and runners during Saturday’s Walk-a-Thon will go to restoration and repair or Prospect Park. Volunteers can help clean up on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Needs: Help cleaning.

Mazel Day School (2915 Brighton 6th Street)
Needs: Help cleaning.

Donation Collection, Fort Greene (corner of Dekalb and Washington Park)

Needs: Food, baby supplies, flashlights, etc., and cleaning supplies. They could also use a few helping hands. Donations will go to folks in Far Rockaway and Sunset Park.

Donation Collection, Clinton Hill, CKO Kickboxing (45 Waverly Avenue)

Needs: Plastic utensils/plates/bowls, non-perishable food, socks, bottled water, flashlights, batteries, cleaning supplies, candles, matches, power stripes, generators, baby supplies. Donations are being collected for Occupy Sandy Relief NYC.
