Two “persons of interest” have been identified by the police in an attempted rape which took place early Sunday morning on a residential block near Prospect Park, according to the NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce.

At a Wednesday press conference, Boyce said cops are using visual identification the victim was able to provide about the suspect, DNA evidence from the scene, and video of the incident to conduct their investigation.

The police have not released the name the persons of interest to the public.

The 34-year-old woman escaped from the attempted rape early Sunday morning in front of 586 16th Street (between Prospect Park Southwest and 11th Avenue), according to the NYPD. The incident took place at approximately 3:50am on Sunday, June 26.

A particularly clear video of the incident was captured from a camera located at 590 16th Street.

Cops say the victim was walking on 16th Street when the suspect approached her from behind, grabbed her, and proceeded to lift up her dress and pull at her underwear. The suspect then knocked the victim to the ground and struck her numerous times about the body, attempting to sexually assault her.

The victim then kicked at the suspect, who became frustrated and then fled. Police say the victim refused medical attention.

Police describe the suspect as male, white, having curly black hair, approximately 20-30 years old, 5’11”, and 180 lb. He was last seen wearing a blue t-shirt and pants.

DNAinfo reported Boyce said, “She was just walking home after socializing with some friends…[s]he did not know him. However, during that fight, she got a very good look at his face.”

Several incidents have taken place nearby or within Prospect Park over the last few months, including a May 22 attempted rape on 2nd Street, and a jogger who fought off an attacker on April 20.
