Upcoming Repairs To Third Street Bridge Will Cause Traffic Delays

On Monday May 22, NYC DOT will begin post-Superstorm Sandy recovery construction on the Third Street Bridge over the Gowanus Canal.

Traffic will be reduced to a single lane between the hours of 7am to 3:30pm from Monday to Friday, May 22 – May 26, and then again from Tuesday to Thursday, May 30 – June 1.

No work will take place over the Memorial Day weekend and traffic will not be disrupted from May 27 – 29.

Flaggers will be situated on both ends of the single traffic lane using “Go/Stop” paddles to direct drivers and help maintain traffic flow. Message boards will also be placed on either side of the bridge to warn approaching vehicles of the single lane.

DOT will be working beneath the roadway deck to rehabilitate the electrical and mechanical operating systems of the movable bridge that was damaged by Sandy in 2012. The agency expects to have all the work completed by Friday, June 2.

Be sure to plan your travel accordingly.
