Upcoming Events Commemorating 5th Anniversary Of Superstorm Sandy

On October 29, 2012, Superstorm Sandy caused the deaths of 43 New York City residents and caused $19 billion in economic damage. The storm had a devastating impact on the Brooklyn-Queens waterfront and Southern Brooklyn, along with the East and South Shores of Staten Island, Southern Queens and lower Manhattan.

Various events have been planned to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the historic storm. See the list below for seven upcoming events taking place in Brooklyn.

New York City’s Coastal Future: What Can Jamaica Bay Be?

When: Tuesdays, October 10, 17, 24, 6pm to 8pm
Where: Kingsborough Community College, The Lighthouse Auditorium, 2001 Oriental Boulevard, Manhattan Beach
What: A three-part event on the changing coastal areas in Jamaica Bay bringing together over 25 local organizations to discuss the watershed and present ideas for its future. Part 1: Life if the Jamaica Bay Watershed (Tuesday, October 10); Part 2: Life on the Streets of the Jamaica Bay Watershed (Tuesday, October 17); Part 3: Looking Forward (Tuesday, October 24). Exploring Red Hook, From Aging Industrial Architecture to Artist Magnet

When: Saturday, October 14, 2pm to 4pm
Where: Meet at the Northeast corner of Seabring and Van Brunt Streets (Near Friends of Firefighters), Red Hook
What: The New York Adventure Club hosts this tour through Red Hook exploring the neighborhood’s many warehouses, industrial buildings, and eateries. The tour guide will also point out the devastating effects of Superstorm Sandy and the area’s ongoing recovery efforts.

Climate Solutions Town Hall: The Path Forward
When: Tuesday, October 24, 7pm to 10pm
Where: Brooklyn College Student Center, Gold Room, 2705 Campus Road, Midwood
What: As part of Brooklyn College’s Superstorm Sandy fifth anniversary week of action, the school hosts a town hall on climate change to demand that state legislators provide leadership and take action to address global warming. The panel will include New York City Environmental Justice Alliance’s Priya Mulgaonkar, Fifth Ave Committee’s and Turning the Tide Environmental Justice Community Organizer Karen Blondel, New York Renews’ Dan Sherrell, and Director of the CUNY International Program for Labor, Climate and Environment’s Sean Sweeney.How Much: Free, register here.

When: Thursday, October 26-Sunday, October 29
Where: Red Hook Library, 7 Wolcott Street (at Dwight Street), Red Hook
What: A series of events addressing climate change and resiliency. The opening event (October 26, 6pm to 8pm) will take place at the Red Hook Library and will feature Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams and other guests discussing Superstorm Sandy and community preparation for ecological change.

On Saturday, October 28, a Round Table Discussion (1:30pm to 4:30pm) will also take place at the Red Hook Library and will feature speakers including: Deputy Brooklyn Borough President Diana Reyna, Council Member Carlos Menchaca, Fifth Ave Committee’s and Turning the Tide Environmental Justice Community Organizer Karen Blondel, Director of Sustainability Programs for NYCHA Vlada Kenniff, Senior Policy Advisor for the Mayor’s Office of Recovery and Resilience Dana Kochnower, and more.

Also on Saturday, October 28, from 5pm to 7:30pm, artist Anita Glesta‘s large-scale, public art, video installation will be projected at the RoodGallery located at 373 Van Brunt Street. The work addresses climate change and infrastructure issues that affect neighborhoods such as Red Hook—a watershed area. (Other locations projecting the artwork will be announced soon.)

When: Saturday, October 28, 11am to 2pm
Where: Meet at Cadman Plaza, One Cadman Plaza East, Downtown Brooklyn
What: Join fellow New Yorkers in a march to remember the lives lost and the damage caused by Sandy and to demand climate action from Mayor de Blasio, Governor Cuomo, and Senator Schumer. The group will meet in Cadman Plaza Park (North Plaza), then march across Brooklyn Bridge to a rally at the Smith NYCHA Houses in the Lower East Side, which were heavily affected by Hurricane Sandy. Exploring Gowanus Canal, Five Years After Sandy
When: Saturday, October 28, 1pm to 3pm
Where: Meet at 35 9th Street, Gowanus
What: Join photographer, filmmaker, and writer Nathan Kensinger on an exploration of the Gowanus Canal five years after Sandy. Kensinger has been documenting the New York City waterfront for the past ten years.

The Barnacle Parade
When: Sunday, October 29
Where: Van Brunt Street, Red Hook
What: This annual event “by Red Hook for Red Hook” held on the anniversary of Superstorm Sandy celebrates the Red Hook community. According to the Brooklyn Community Board 6 newsletter, this year’s parade will raise money to support the victims of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. Check out the event’s Facebook page for updates.
