Pedestrian Dies In Dollar Van Hit-And-Run Near Kings Plaza

Cops are trying to track down the driver of a van that mowed down a couple as they were crossing the street in Marine Park yesterday.

A 47-year-old man has died of is injuries and his 50-year-old wife is in critical condition after they were both struck by a grey van, with a red stripe, while attempting to cross Flatbush Avenue, mid-block, between Avenue U and Avenue V, on Friday, August 12, at about 5pm, according to police.

The operator of the bus — which was traveling southbound on Flatbush Avenue — fled the location, turning westbound onto Avenue V, an NYPD investigation has revealed. A sideview mirror that was knocked off by the impact will be used to aid the investigation, CBS reports.

EMS responded to the location and transported both victims to Kings County Hospital, where the husband succumbed to head trauma and internal injuries. The wife remains in critical condition with severe head trauma and internal injuries.

Police believe the vehicle is a grey Ford Omnibus, or a “dollar van” — unregulated vehicles that offer low-cost transportation along Flatbush Avenue. Surveillance footage from Kings Plaza Mall, which is across from the incident, turned up a grainy image of the vehicle leaving the scene.

Update [1:34pm]: Police may have located the dollar van responsible for the hit-and-run, reports Pix 11.

The deceased man has been identified as 47-year-old Angel Sagardia, and his wife Samantha Sagardia, 50, is still in critical condition.
